Subject: How can we leave and keep face?

Simple quetion - how can we get out of Iraq, without losing respect and moral in our armed forces (as suffered by America after Vietnam)? Obviously, one option is to stay the course, and win. This would mean finding and destroying our enemies, and ending corruption in the Iraqi government, while training them to look after themselves. Me, I can't see this happening. At least, not while Iran and Syria are acting in a similar role to Cambodia in the Vietnam conflict. We need to do something about the porous borders if we are to win. Can we do this without escalating the conflict to include Iran and Syria though? The obvious answer to me, for us Brits at least, is to simply say straight out, that our military expeditionary forces are based around sustaining a medium, and two small deployments only, and we can not sustain Iraq and Afghanistan at our current level of expenditure. As such, we should simply pull out of Iraq, and put more resources into Afghanistan (as I have said before, I see this as a far more winnable conflict, but we still have to deal with Pakistan, who to a degree are little better than the Iranians). How else can we get ourselves out? SHort of running with our tails betwen our legs, or winning?

What about a gradual expansion of the Green Zone every week or two. Eventually it will include the entire side of the city on that side of the river to the Baghdad Airport.

Replace nieghborhood militias with Iraqi regular troops. Iraqi troops and police will be deployed to an area for weeks at a time. This is a war and they need to approach it like one instead of a 9 to 5 job.

US Forces be allowed to use overwhelming firepower and will be called on if Iraqi regular units are engaged. You want it to where the last thing insurgents want is US forces to get involved.

We need to get the electricity going at normal rates. Prosecute contractors that scam the US government and generously reward the ones that follow through. Open contract bidding to international firms.

Basra is quiet so why worry about UK withdrawal. There are scenarios that suggest that there will be no withdrawal AT ALL. Other scenarios suggest levaing a token training n support force and jumping the ship and blaming Iraqis for mis-management.

Iraqi corruption is the kicker in my view. I'm not sure that Iraq means most to the average Iraqi. I'm not sure how we get them in that mindset.
