It was declared unviable. Steering to hard or something like that. To bad because it seemed like it would be useful. Perhaps someone will come up with a revised version.

EW3    same osprey?   12/30/2006 10:49:56 AM

On June 3, 2005, the United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron, HMM-263, stood down to begin the process of transitioning to the MV-22 Osprey. On December 8, 2005, Lieutenant General Amos, commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, accepted the delivery of the first fleet of MV-22s, delivered to HMM-263. The unit reactivated March 3, 2006 as the first MV-22 squadron, and was re-designated VMM-263. The Osprey will enter operational service with the Marine Corps in 2007.

Really? And I'd given up on it. Hope it works.

It does, and it will.  This summer they flew non-stop across the Atlantic to show it's deployability.
Really? And I'd given up on it. Hope it works.

HYPOCENTER    THE OSPREY = NEW HUEY   12/31/2006 5:02:35 AM
So if the osprey's a "go"..... and is being put into service.... do you think it will become the new "huey"? A huey for the 21st century, if you will.

What I mean is.... do you think it will be as widely used as that was... or even more-so... and become as iconic as the huey?

unlikely it will be a new huey. It's designed to do different things.
For the most part the huey is still fine for local light loads.  No reason to use a V-22.
The V-22 is meant for heavier loads and greater distances and for when speed of delivery is a premium.

Nothing will replace the iconic status of what you guys call the Huey. The Huey defines helicopter. Nothing else sounds like the Huey. The most famous line in Apocalypse Now might just as easily have been:

"Do you hear that? UH1 Iroquois, son. Nothing else in the world sounds like that!"

Cheers.
