Well if Saddam's WMDs were so easily removable and could end up in the hands of other, stronger countries, or unknown terrorists wouldn't it have made sense not to invade? If the administration was so sure of WMD in Iraq that they knew right where they were, why not leave them there? Saddam wouldn't do anything rash with the US looking over his shoulder, so why run the risk of someone else or some other country taking them in the inevitable power vaccum that would be created by an invasion?
That is if there really were WMDs to begin with. Most of these field reports about found WMDs are actually false positives of other chemicals. These field tests are very unreliable and thus real tests have to be done in a controlled environment at a lab. All of these lab tests have not yielded evidence that there were any WMD in Iraq.
"Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, several reported finds of chemical weapons were announced. During the invasion itself, there were half a dozen incidents in which the US military announced that it had found chemical weapons. All of these claims were based on field reports, and were later retracted. After the war, many cases ? most notably on April 7, 2003 when several large drums tested positive ? continued to be reported in the same way."
"Since the 2003 war _no_ banned weapons have been found and it is thought likely that no large quantities of them remain hidden in Iraq."

So there remain two possible scenarios. A.) Iraq had WMDs in large quantities and they were taken to other countries during the invasion or post-invasion either by agents of these countries, terrorists, or agents of the Iraqi government ordered by Saddam (since he got along famously with both Syria and Iran). B.) Iraq never had WMD, but Saddam wanted the illusion of having WMD because he feared being attacked by Iran, Turkey, Israel, and the US. So he used that illusion as a deterrent, and when his bluff was called he blinked and allowed inspectors back in.
So this means that either the war caused more damage than good by spreading WMD across the Middle East (option A) or was unecessary altogether (option B). |
