Subject: Americans must respect Islam
salaam al-aqaaid    5/13/2004 10:18:35 AM
The outrageous atrocities commited by Americans at the Abu al-Grayyib prison complex speaks to a need for the United States Americans to give sensetivity training to its entire military so that they will no longer offind Muslims with the contemptious use of women as prison guards and unsavery adiction to homosexual pornographies. These things are offinsive to the Muslims community. Have you no shame? You must remove all women and homosexuals from contact with Muslim prisoners. This is offinsive.

If Islam cant tolerate criticism or self-examination of its tenets as we are doing on this thread - and as other religions have done and do on a regular basis - its in more trouble than I imagined. " Swhitebull, Islam is a religion not a person. Intoleration is a personal trait, so it belongs to persons. Just to clarify your confusion. As long as discussed civily, any discussion topic is good to discuss even the stupid ones like top 10 apples of the world.

The obvious error and ignorance of this ludicrous and childish post negates the need for any sort of reasonable attempt at discourse. Thanks to SW for the Fisking. please feel free to Fisk away on our latest trollish incarnation - it's amusing. E.

"As long as discussed civily, any discussion topic is good to discuss even the stupid ones like top 10 apples of the world." Mmmmm... Apples. 10) Jonagold - A commercial apple that manages to overcome the worst aspects of its too ancestors. 9) Cameo - A great off season apple because it has tremendous staying power both in sweetness and crunch. 8) Prisilla - A very spicy and aromatic apple. 7) Fuji - Super sweet almost syrupy apple. 6) Dixie Red - An absolutely huge tart apple with amazing crunch. 5) Gala - Firm, aromatic, and sweet. The consumate childrens apple. 4) Rome Beauty - Beautiful fruit with a strong combination of aroma, sweetness, and crunch. 3) Arkansas Black - Wine dark apple with a great combination of wetness and crunch. Avoids perfection by a sometimes course texture. 2) Braeburn - Always satisfyingly crisp with complex spicy flavors. 1) Honeycrisp - A difficult apple that really requires small orchards to produce well, and the fruit doesn't look it but its amazing in the mouth.

"I will have to stop on the way home tonight and get some Red Delicious!!!" Please no. For the love of fruit, stop yourself. But anything but one of those meally, inconsistantly flavored, soft, and tasteless Wolfwine's (aka red 'Delicious', a name it doesn't deserve and which it was given only for marketing purposes). If I was painting beautiful apples, I might choose a Wolfwine for its classic apple shape and lusterous skin, but eat one? Yuck! Yuck! Double yuck!! Promote the sale and farming of better tasting apples by boycotting Wolfwine's. The golden 'Delicious' is at least a halfway decent apple if you can get one fresh, but there are alot better apples than that even if they are by appearance smaller, less perfectly shaped, and less attractively colored.

Celebrim may consider my opinion severe or extreme, but he proves my point. There are NO books published by moderate islamic authors available anywhere! Period! No argument! I’ve looked. Extensively. My position is not a product of bigotry; it is the result of exhaustive research. The term “moderate islam” is a contradiction. Examine how islamic writers who question are treated: Death Sentences! A year ago (or more) I repeatedly plead with proponents and adherents of islam to offer me just one example of a major muslim cleric publicly condemning islamic fundamentalism (terrorism) and advocating opposition to same. They could not. Check the archives if you doubt me. I found ONE cleric, in Bahrain I believe. I found the quote; no contributor offered the same information. In its totality, islam can produce ONE cleric who preaches for peace and AGAINST terror? This multi-cultural, multi-national religion cannot actively and publicly condemn terrorists who speak in its name, except through the voice of secular governments whose officials jeopardize their lives by doing so. (Assassination attempts in Pakistan, bombings in Turkey) Ilspar: I think you disservice Turkey when you use the example of your country being opposed to terrorism as PROOF that islam is “peaceful”. You have argued that it is Arab nationalism and/or Arab expansionism that give islam a bad name. I continue to argue that Persians, Pakistani, Indonesians, Mauritanians, Nigerians, Sudanese, etc are not Arab. Yet the muslim clerics in those countries do not publicly speak against terrorism. Privately they encourage the abuses, and celebrate the events. Until islam produces a popular hero who will nail “thesis” to the door of the mosque in full daylight, those peaceful citizens who live under the shadow of 8th Century islamic Theocracy are guilty of the “sin of omission”, a concept even Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto’s, and Christian’s understand. Or, as Machiavelli proposed, people deserve the government they have, until they are willing to change it. Either way, islam and its believers are not innocent. 12345678: Watch this….9,10! Knockout! Nothing else you said requires a reply! (in the US ruels is spelled rules) Wait! How typical of anti-Semitic pro-islamic terrorist enablers to demand the silencing of discussion. Buzz off!

Why is it the longest threads here are started by trolls? Anyway... I too believe Americans should respect Islam. With regard to the Abu Graib prison abuse scandal, I believe Americans should heed the words of the Quran and the Hadiths on the treatment of captives taken in war. We should either kill them, sell them into slavery, or hold them for ransom.

appleciderus    Apples?   6/15/2004 10:11:36 PM
Apples! I have occasionally explained how I came by this “handle”. I own an apple orchard. I love to make apple cider. I reserve the “hard” cider for personal use, but am known locally for the quality of my “sweet” cider. Over the years I have been frustrated with the need to have multiple “handles” or “ID’s” while utilizing the Internet. It seemed every time I registered on a site, I had to choose a new “handle” or “ID”, because the one I had been most recently employing was already being used by another. A common complaint most of us have. One time, in an attempt to offer me a compromise for the “ID” I requested, the site came up with what I suspect is a vulgate Latin translation of my request. It was so unusual, I adopted it permanently, and it has served me well. I have no idea why a poster (whose ID I have forgotten) would think this a title of derision, but am excited to talk about apples. I own eleven hundred apple trees, and over the years have formed some strong opinions about various varieties. (imagine that) Firstly there is no such thing as a bad apple. (except perhaps a Rome apple) “Jonagold” was not developed to overcome its parents shortcomings, but an attempt to preserve the taste of “Jonathon” apples: they are the traditional favorite of Mid-Westerners, and are condemned to extinction by a disease known as “fire-blight”. “Fuji”, as its name implies, is of Japanese origin. Recently developed, it has become a favorite of growers. Produces quickly, and widely accepted by shoppers because of its quality and taste. I suspect Celebrim’s choices are a result of two factors: locally grown apples always taste better, and “CA” apples always taste “mealy”. (CA means controlled atmosphere, the oxygen is removed from the sealed storage area, and the apples are prevented from going bad) In addition, many apples are protected from disease and picked at a time that ensures successful shipping. Red delicious is my least favorite, but not a bad fresh apple. It became popular because it shipped well, and survived the CA process well. It’s the apple “mom” put in the lunch box every day. It is essential in my cider recipe. Golden Delicious is, in my opinion, the best overall apple ever discovered. (It was a natural mutation, the enshrined ancestor tree just recently expired) Granny Smith is disappearing because, IMHO, orchards are replacing traditional apples with “trendy” apples like Fuji, with no loss of quality. The “market-place” at work. If Mid-Westerners enjoy “Jonathon” as their traditional favorite, Easterners tend towards McIntosh. Another natural selection discovered in Ontario. (if memory serves) To this day, I take young family visitors into the orchard in the early morning to pluck a softball sized McIntosh from the top of a tree. With the night-long temperature in the apple, its colder than a glass of OJ from the ‘fridge. I often turn away to avoid witnessing the embarrassment my visitor suffers while sweet apple juice cascades down the chin and neck. In my mind, there is no finer apple, and, it is essential to a quality cider. (my cider) This apple distraction offers me the chance to speak about something I know intimately and successfully. It reminds me that my opinions on other subjects are not expert, and require consistent and persistent research.
