Subject: FN FAL in Iraq
jofredes    4/22/2004 2:41:27 AM
While we are talking about AK74:s how about the FN FAL:s that have been seen in use by the insurgents on the pictures fron the latest fighing in Iraq. Has the Fal been in in previous use by the Iraqi army(in smaller numbers perhaps before the AK47 became standard)? At the beginning of the war you could see pictures of militiamen armed with H&K G3:s, these obviously must have been captured from the Iranians during the Iran-Iraq war, but I cant see where the Fal should how come from, hardly from Iran.

When the FN was adopted as the Brit version SLR it was also adopted by most Commonwealth armies (the Canadians claim they adopted it first) as well as by the Arabian Gulf States. This was at a time when the Brits could still produce/identify a good rifle! :) Oman, Bahrain and numerous others had both SLR and FN versions in their arsenals which they issued interchageably. My comment on the UK SLR's was merely a humorous aside; but, given the nature of the second hand arms market, no-one can say that UK SLR's wont turn up anymore than all the old Lee Enfields literring Afghanistan et als.

And that's just the 7.62 short; try it with the NATO 7.62 x 51mm. Don't be surprised if you get penetration; we could shoot through 12mm side & rear armor on Soviet BMP's at 100 meters.
