If you want Democarcy, WHY don't you start with Eygpt where the government you suuuuuuuuuuuuport (2billion a year, right?) is viciously imprisoning people like Saad Eddin Ibrahim. "Oh, yah, we just don't get it man?" "why are they soo suspicious of us? we just want to bring them democarcy?"ddddddddddddddahahahha! You freaks! Clean up after yourself, maybe than you can change something for the good of humanity.

Why indeed? Perhaps it is because that is something that lead to a full scale Middle Eastern War? The only reason that the rest of the Middle East even accepted a tiny bit what we did to Iraq is because they hated and feared Saddam Hussein. No such hatred of Mubarak in Egypt exists. If the US started to promote reform in Egypt first then Egypt would shun it, even risk its foreing aid(mostly military) and get it elsewhere. Also, Egypt has a much stronger Islamist movement centered in it. If the US tried to interfere, they might bring down the current government, but there would be a chance of a theocracy taking hold. The administration wasn't willing to take that risk. Iraq is the most secular ME country. So start there first in trying to establish a secular liberal democracy. If it fails in Iraq, it will fail everywhere else in the ME. We really don't want the current Egyptian government to fall, as its replacement might rescind the peace treaty with Israel, ands start up another cycle of Arab-Israeli violence. Think the Palestinian peopel are suffering now? That would be nothing compared to what they would endure in another major ME war.

Do I detect just a touch of anger and irony in your post ad hominem? Anyway, you do bring up some valid points. Certainly Bush and other senior administration officials have financial reasons for the military action in Iraq. Were financial considerations the main reason for the US action? Probably not. There currently are, and will continue to be, many mistakes made by the US in Iraq. Basic services are still not restored in many cities. The looting of the Baghdad history museum was a major fiasco. Etc, etc, etc. Yet nearly everyone involved warned that it would take time (months) to reconstruct Iraq. I am willing to wait another 6 to 8 weeks before writing the reconstruction off as a failure. By then the Situation Should be much improvced.

A failure to promote democratic reform in Egypt in no way undermines attempts to promote democratic reform in Iraq. It makes perfect sense to me to focus on overthrowing the worst dictatorships first (ie Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and Syria) before focusing on other countries. Afterall, we were allied with the USSR against Nazi Germany. After the war was over, we focuses on the USSR. And the aid going to Egypt is not designed to support an Arab dictator. It is basically a bribe for peace with Israel.
