No, as far as I know, it's Government Issue, as whenever one talks about 'your standard GI sock', or what have you.

its usually "klick" and it is short for a kilometer (0.62 miles) Part of a little used system for measuring weights and distances called the "Metric System", used by Canada, Cambodia Cameroon,Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo (Zaire), Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea (North), Korea (South) Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, ... hmm might be easier to list the countries that aren't officially metric, they are: The USA, Liberia (in western Africa) and Myanmar.

GI Government Issue. Came out of US Army in World War II when everything a soldier owned was governement issued and then the troops started to say they were also. Name has stuck. Metric System Okay, so you want us to switch to the metric system (a system which I used just fine when I lived and visited in Europe) here in the USA? Good luck! Do you really think we could convert to 100 meter field in American Football (no way!) And what about the statement that the most perfect distance in the world is 60 feet 6 inches (the distance from the pitcher's mound rubber to home plate in baseball)?!?!? And don't get me started on what would happen to NASCAR!!!! I do have one question, though. I have played golf in the UK, Canada and the US. Do golf course in other parts of the world use yards or meters? PS: Jean, yes the metric system was one of the better things to come out of the French Revolution, Now as for Napoleon's Calendar....

If God had wanted us to use the Metric System, He would have given us ten fingers.
