Subject: Conventional warfare against host nations
Yimmy    8/13/2006 3:31:55 PM
Does conventionally waged warfare against nations who harbour/contain terrorist elements work?

For instance, the US/UK invading Afghanistan to flush out Bin Laden (and as a result of harbouring him, the Taliban), or Israel invading the Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah, or were the UK to invade the Republic of Ireland to flush out IRA elements.

Whats your opinion?

The UK invading the ROI would make little sense - they really did not like the IRA either, and having the illusion of security in the South gave the UK a great opportunity to see who was coming and going. Generally speaking, such campaigns are not easy, but they can work, especially if done right. In some ways, it is like arctic warfare - you send a lot of troops in, and you will get nowhere, but if you send small teams in, they can get the job done. The key to success is the use of special forces, combined with firepower - it takes skill to track down the bad guys, and when you find them, you need to hit them hard. As for conventional warfare, it does not normally work, but a proper conventional force can adapt to COIN operations very easily, witness the US Army in Iraq, where (contrary to popular belief) they are actually doing very will. The problem with trying to defeat Hezbollah is because they are equipped with all the mod cons, since they are effectively a branch of the Iranian IRGC, and have had years to dig in and prepare.
