Subject: RE:Europe Union's future: A dark cloud or a ray of sunlight
lex    12/17/2003 3:18:42 PM
I'm belgian, and toghether with luxemburg and holland we are kind of the creators of the European Union. I think it's not suprising that the idea of a united europe is founded right here. The problem with belgium is, we know no patriotism whatsoever. you wont see belgian flags when we celebrate our independance day, you wont hear someone say he's proud to be belgian (nevertheless i am). So if you combine a lack of national identity to a yearning to have authority in todays world (being part of the EU, NATO, etc. belgium has a vote that people have to listen to, otherwise noone would listen to us) it becomes increasingly evident that small countries choose for the EU. Countries who still have power, pride and self esteem (face it france and germany have lost alot of that) choose not to enter this engagement that would only limit its powers. Damn right the british dont join the EU, and they shouldn't either... but in quickly progressing world, only large communities really count. Look at the US, look at China. It might become increasingly interesting to come and gather around to create some colateral relations...
