Subject: British Deployment to Afghanistan
BRoger    1/26/2006 12:08:34 PM
It was confirmed today that the UK is to deploy some 4,100 extra troops to Afghanistan as it takes command of NATO forces there. This force is to be built around the 3rd Para. According to the British Army website, there on 687 soldiers in a parachute battalion. Therefore, what are the other 3,300 troops for? That seems a very large number to support less than 700 infantry soldiers (even allowing for the engineers who will deploy initially to build the bases that they will operate from). For instance when a RM Commando deployed there, that total number of troops was approximately 1,700.

This sounds more like a Brigade force with some engineers. I thought that 16 Air Assault Brigade were penciled in for this.

As part of NATO's expansion into Southern Afghanistan, a task force based around units from 16 Air Assault Brigade will deploy to Helmand Province. and The Helmand Task Force will comprise elements of the Headquarters of Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade, and airborne infantry battlegroup. Based initially around the Third Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, it will incorporate a force of eight Apache Attack Helicopters, provided by 9 Regiment, Army Air Corps, the first time we have deployed this impressive new capability on an operation. 9 Regiment will also supply four Lynx Light Utility Helicopters while 27 Squadron, Royal Air Force, will provide a detachment of six Chinook Support Helicopters. Other major units and capabilities include Scimitar and Spartan armoured vehicles from the Household Cavalry Regiment, a battery of 105mm Light Guns from 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, a battery of Desert Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from 32 Regiment, Royal Artillery, 13 Air Assault Regiment and 29 Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corps, 7 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and 16 Close Support Medical Regiment. We shall also deploy four additional Royal Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

Are you still active Yimmy? What is your regiment? Do you expect to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan anytime soon?

At the moment I am just TA longrifle, I am in the process of applying for a full time career. I am in the process of transfering from 151 Regiment (RLC) to the London Regiment (Infantry). Paperwork takes ages. My old regiment is sending some people in ~March and my new in next ~Jan, but thats just rumour.

If you read the full statement on the MoD site, it's rather more because it includes Fwd HQ ARRC.

How big would the total deployment be if the whole of 16th AAB (all three infantry batallions) deployed then? Presumably, approaching 6,000 odd? It must be the biggest brigade in the British Army. Interesting how the last British combat deployment there involved the Royal Marines, but this time they plumped for the Para's. Do people think this is due to mission specific details and capabilities or more down to availability? It sounds like its going to be a pretty dangerous deployment with a large chance of some significant confrontations with Taleban remnants and other insurgents. In which case, would it not have made more sense to send in the Royal Marines (with their heavier weapons and armour)?

I think the heavy weapons and armour is being dealt with by the eight Westland Apaches, and Scimiters being deployed.

And the BV210 viking does not count as armour.
