Why argue with French Stratege? Of course French troops were the best in the world, are the best now and will be forever in the future.

I have never said that our troops are the best but among the best.I rank British army first in average quality today for the troops but some French units like FFL/Marines are at the same level of UK best.Dutch marine or some US units also.But US marine corps overall is below in quality.And it is due to your procedural culture, habit to have outstanding logistic and support and politically correctness (and the fact they are youguer), and risk averse culture considering casualties. So in a situation where you are on par or outperformed, I doubt your troops will overcome their natural disadvantage (without airforce rescue). Swhitebull is right to say you have to avoid to be put in such a bad situation, however it is impossible to avoid it when you are on parity with your adversary: you have to concentrate to win so to have weaknesses in an other point where you will be outgunned and outnumbered. US are lucky: it almost never happened in previous war because due to US size and power (and ocean protection), you fight to 10 to 1/3 to 1 average superiority (and also due to the fact you enter war after your adversary have been already attrited). You could not have build an empire like Brtish or French because your way of war is too costly and people would not have accepted that due to the costs: French conquered Chad and Soudan (before giving it back to UK) with 4000 men greatly outnumbered in XIX century for exemple.You would have put 100 000 men and so congress would have refuse it for the cost.

okay fs, your correct, hundreds of losses throughout history, and it was not 4 div vs just BH. It was units that participated.. The 50000 was the entire force in the area(well, not sure of number, but that was the area) As far as the battle, it was more like 3000+per DIVISION. even if you include the WHOLE div, thats only 12000 vs 3700 or so. Now if you take units that actually participated, not just ASSIGNED, then you whittle that down further. Remember, unlike the 8A, axis forces were almost always seriously understrength so, nice try, but dice... and ps...you still lost......

Sorry, FS, you are >still< overlooking the fact that the USMC is at the absolute top of it's game. Alot of Marines have 2-3 to Iraq and have seen combat first hand (many in ambushes and have fought without air superiority or advantage in numbers, they won because they destroyed the enemy with fire and manuever/superior training). The French troops have no real combat experience...therefore the USMC is equal to anyone oin tehw world

doomed 1/1/2006 7:42:28 PM is that true, though, Bunkerdestroyer? you're right: every film has some defending some lost fort in the desert (why bother defending it in the first place, no one knows) and fighting to the last man against arab masses. but is there any truth to this myth, i wonder? Imagine if you were in the middle of desert fighting hordes of arabs. What would be the point in surrendering, you'd either be hunted down by the arabs or killed by the desert itslef. Therefore you might aswell stand your ground and kill as many as you can.

Grow up, As much as I respect the FFL the United States Marine Corp would demolish the FFL. In case it may have slipped your attention the USMC have indeginous Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing assests which on there own could give the FFL and very hard time, through in the Artillery and Armour, and I know who my bet is on. The lack of respect that the USMC seems to be treated with by those who know absolutely nothing about them seriously p!sses me off!!!!!!

I have a lot of respect for the USMC but the foreign legion and USMC are simply uncomparable in my opinion. Id ont even feel the need to back up my claims because its basically a fact already.
