Plz list great Military strategists (Battle situations, not entire war planners or simply executors of the plan) & their work literary or literal..2 come to my mind immediately... Sun Tzu - Art of War Rommel, the desert Fox of course for his famous Panzer battles across North Africa.

in the category of doing more with less you would be hard pressed to find a better man than general brock who led the british forces during the war of 1812. it should be counted as a great bit of good fortune for the americans he was killed in battle when he was.

How can Brock be rated as a great commander for besting untrained militia?

there were a fair number of regulars along with the militia. while the battles were small spuds compared what the other names managed they were crucial in saving Canada which makes them strategically important given how important canada was later on in the world wars. brock was in much the same sort of situation that slim was in. truly minimal british forces facing considerable odds much of the time at the end of a very long logistical string. most of brocks forces were also militia as well remember. think of it as an honourable mention rather than being put forth as a serious contender.

Oops, forgot a couple: Michael Collins: key figure in developing modern 'asymetrical' warfare. Successfully fought the British to a standstill in their own backyard with a force never more than a few thousand. Then on the winning side (if posthumously) of one of the stupidest civil wars in history, where he led regulars to defeat an insurgency. Mao Zedong: Studied Collins carefully & adapted it to a vastly larger scale. Able to convert from guerilla to conventional tactics when necessary. Created blueprint for virtually all communist insurgencies of the postwar era.

The USMC in its doctrine and studies in the 1920s developed what became known as isalnd hooping. It was a natural extension of envelopment by maneuver which was as old as warfare...but became doable with teh advent of aircraft and the aircraft carrier.

General Winfield Scott served fromm the War of 1812 through the Civil War. He formulated the Anaconda plan for the defeat of the South. I think he ranks up there.
