What do u think? Would the Indian army be able to hold off the chinese in a conventional war? Who do u think would be on the Chinese and indian "sides"?

Alexis    If China attacks India ... How the h*ll will she manage that ?   1/24/2005 8:51:12 AM
Massive land invasion is out of question because of geography : the Himalaya surely rings a bell ... Limited land invasion could be attempted in the Easternmost part of India, but to what avail ? This is far from the most developed part of India, little objectives of significance could be found there. Bombing would be a possibility, but China only has obsolete H-6 as long range bombers now, and India's Mirage 2000 would have no trouble disposing of them. As for naval war, China's blue water Navy is relatively small now, while India's, though more developed, does not often venture far from the Indian Ocean. Adding that China and India do not have many quarrels now (but for a far away glacier that China holds while India pretends it is hers ... and WHO cares about a high altitude glacier ?), it is really difficult to see how and why China would make war on India. As for the long term, who knows ? But I would find it hard to imagine how advanced countries would make war in 2050 ...

On one on one , India would not only push the Chinese back but propably win some ground too . Indians are far more "bloody" than the Chineses can be . India 's Forces are better equipped and their will to fight is greater . Cheers .

Whats the objective, whos attacking, what time frame, is this a hypothetical 1 vs 1 or do we consider political realities?

China has a border Issue going on with india, and it lays claim to one whole indian state. It also has problems with india giving shelter to tibetians. (read Dalai Lama) Motive however would not be entirely this. China would gain unprecedented supremacy over the South Asia and S.E Asia if she wins a war with India! If the chinese launch an air attack on india, and joins hands with pakistan and Myanmmar to launch a ground attack! Do u think that the indians would be able to hold ground? What alliances do u think india can form, and who would come ahead in India's favour?

“On one on one , India would not only push the Chinese back but propably win some ground too . Indians are far more "bloody" than the Chineses can be. India's Forces are better equipped and their will to fight is greater.” Blue, I was just wondering why you believe that? My read on the air forces is that the top of the line birds are roughly equivalent in numbers and quality, while China has many, many more second line aircraft. A naval comparison has the Indians with a carrier, the PLAN with a larger, stronger sub force. I admit to not knowing much about the land OOB of either, but would think the tech levels would be roughly equivalent. As for the will to fight I don’t think that the Chinese showed any lack of will during the Korean War when they used sheer numbers to counteract the superior firepower of the UN forces. Not to mention that the one time the two have gone head to head (1962) the Chinese won quite easily. In a current conflict between the two I don’t have enough info to determine likely outcomes. How prepared are the Chinese to stage their forces in the West? The Indians in the north? IMO China has the advantage in overall strength, but it would come down to whom could bring the most strength to bear on the area of conflict, and that I don’t know.

The bulk of Chinas force footprint is focussed on the east. The Himalayas are seen as a natural barrier.

I'd argue that if war escalated suddenly (ie no gradual indications) China would be hard pressed to get sufficient forces on ground. At a deployment level, in fact a land forces approach through the Glacier is probably the easiest for either side.
