I do think for a guerilla war to be successfull, it needs to part of an alliance. the Danish reled kind of a guerilla war - and was emminently successfull. I will point to joe6pack's comment about a good infrastructure to facilitate aid/reenforcements from your allies. The possesion of the countryside is very important when you invade reinforce: An in vasion is infinately easier if you are wellcome where you land - call it experience over 1000 years. Securing roads and airfields is an other important role of a HomeGuard - especially if you have such tank-unfriendly country. If the cavalry knows the road is secure they will advance with speed - otherwise they will have to a nasty risk or bring masses of own infantry.

dobry den, roman: i had the pleasure of visiting slovakia in 1988 and was able to speak to people as i speak polish and the two languages are similar enough to allow communication (although ordering tea --'herbata' in polish-- in bratislava caused peals of laughter). the main thing that i came away with when speaking to people was dread of the draft: my advice is to do away with it forever. it is a european tradition but has no place in the modern world. what is needed is a small professional modern force. a large unwieldy, underequipped and unmotivated force of shanghaied conscripts is of little value. ending the draft would be a bold and decisive step forward.

I couldn't agree with you more! While no nation can renounce conscription in case of dire emergency, as a rule it an intolerable and ineffective way of having mere numbers in an army!

how do you feel about it? apprehensive? i hear it's generally a waste of a year of one's life. in poland there were often a lot of casualties; live ammo in training and the lot. a pole once told me a story of a horrible training accident during a training exercise in which 5 men were killed on board a ship. he ran to wake up his commander who told him in an irritated voice, "i'm allowed a 10% attrition rate for training. don't wake me up for such trifles. now f** off and let me get back to sleep!". he he not trying to scare you though. i'm sure it's not like that anymore now that the cold war is over. and slovaks don't have to do a tour of duty in Czecho like they used to, right?
