By mistake I have pressed the post button.
4. Alexander the Great. If he had lived long enogh he could have passed the successes of Cyrus. He had the finest army of his time which is one of the reasons I rated him below Cyrus. Another reason is his empire did not last after his death.
5. Murad I. 3rd ruler of Ottoman Empire. When he came into power Ottomans were a small Duchy. He created the entire Ottoman army system. Janissaries, Sipahis, Guard Cavalry, Akinci, artillery corps were all his creations. Even in his latest battles he had at most 12,000 soldiers but he decisively won all of his 16 battles. he defeated Byzantium, Serbians, Bulgarians, Wallachians, Hungarians, Karaman Emirate, Crusaders, Bosnians. On his death Pope ordered every Catolic Church to rang their bells to celebrate. His day of death is still a holiday in Serbia after 612 years.
6. Napoleon: Great commander. If he had not possess such a huge ego, he might have founded a great and lasting empire. He have lost because after his betrayal to Spanish royal house noone have ever trusted him. After that even his allies plotted his removal. To win one must have possess the virtue of trustworthy.
7. Caesar. Excellent career. Always victorious.
8. Pyrus. Even Hannibal have put before himself. Excellent commander, bad statesman. He was almost as good as Alexander in the battlefield. But he was not that good at operations. If his statesmanship had been as good as his military skills he might have destroyed Rome.
8. Hannibal. Excellent battle commander. But his strategy was wrong. He must have found a way to siege Rome. That was the heart of Rome.
9. Scipio Africanus. Better than Hannibal in campaign planning but did not possess the charisma of Hannibal or his battlefield skills.
10. Atilla. Scourge of mars. One of the most successful Nomadic commanders. United germany and the steppes under one rule. Almost destroyed both Roman empires. He is not higher in the list because of his near defeat draw at Cataulinia.
11. Timur. The latest of the great nomadic leaders. Never defeated. He succeeded even against near impossible odds. He had brilliant manuevers. An expert of treachery. His battlefield commanding is not that excellent though.
12. Frederick the Great.
13. Moltke the Elder.
14. Nelson. The most successful naval commander of all time.
15. Nimitz. Midway. The most decisive victory of 20th Century. One of the most decisive naval victories of all time.
16. Nobunaga.
17. Barbaros Hayrettin. Never defeated. His victory at Preveza was one of the world's best victories against a superior enemy both in numbers and quality.
18. Suvarov.
19. Shaka. Created only spear armed army that have defeated a rifle armed army.
20. Wellington.
