Subject: most powerful country in Scandinavia then and now??
Danuas    6/23/2004 2:22:36 PM
Who was the most powerful Scandinavian country back history and now( Army, territory, economy)???
For a While Denmark controlled all of Scandinavia under the Kalmar Union. Sweden resisted but failed many times.
But in the end Sweden rised and became independet nation. After some wars with Denmark, it ended up becoming one of the most powerful empires in Europe for a while.
Sweden even became very close to take over Denmark .Manily because the Danish navy stuck do to freezing Ice and the Swedish army could just walk over the Ice. What was the most powerful country in Scandinavia and what about now???

Sweden and far from other for industry and military. However Finland have success economically in a remarquable way and also Norway with oil.Norway have plenty of capital and money. In a surge Norway could buy a lot of military item if they want if they sell assets they have by the "fund for next generations".

In the past i would say that Denmark was the most powerful nation in scandinavia. Now i think that the Royal Danish Army is possesing less power then ever. The government is useing 1.4% of its GDP which is not that much. There are even plans of useing even less money in the military. In times like these i think ist a bad idea. On the other hand, Denmark isnt in any danger of an attack. Properly never will.

First of all: The recent defence agreement does not give less money to the armed forces in Denmark - there is a slight increase. The territorial army will be disbanded and the task turned over to the Home Guard. Conscription is cut to 4 months - combat troops are no longer conscripted. The Home Guard volunteers give service, that is never paid for - and there are 60.000 of them. There has been set aside funding for international operations, with an option for increases - if the situation warrents it. In total a considerable strengthning of the Danish Armed forces. Especially the Danish army is going to be different, but stronger and more appropiately trained and equipped for future need - we have won the cold war!

In the 2nd World War I would say that the Finns proved themselves the most formidible (The Mannerheim Line was only punctured due to overwhelming Russian numbers) and the most willing to fight. Denmark was taken over within 24 hours and Norway was torn apart by the German landings, the only major successes being the sinking of KMS Bluecher by coastal batteries in Oslo Fjord. Because Sweden remained 'neutral' (They purchased many of their weapons from Germany, including Czech-produced Pz38(t) light tanks), there can be no really accurate assessment. I don't really know enough about these countries to give an accurate modern assessment either, but I know that Swedish aircraft designs tend to be highly advanced and effective (Saab's new Gripen design seems promising)

Well, Sweden hands down. Sweden has the biggest population, largest territory, the most extensive military history and traditions, homegrown technology in world class deployed en masse. Sweden has also historically had the strongest diplomatic and political influence on the region and beyond of all the Scandinavian countries, a legacy which continues to this day. Sincerely OplotMira

Well, maybe I can start with Carl IIX and his campaign in the Baltics and Russia, as well as Swedish actions and Finland. Many Finns in the border-areas speak Swedish to this day, and the Swedish cultural contribution to the Baltic nation is generally held in high esteem by Latvians and Estonians alike. Also, I could mention Sweden's role in the Napoleonic Wars, helping to dispach Denmark, one of Napoleons greatest allies in Northern Europe. In the afthermath of the war, Sweden effectively brought Norway under the Swedish Crown, a move which came to spark the movement to make Norway an independent nation after over 400 years of colonial rule. Then we have Swedens post-war diplomatic achievements, which first and foremost include the formation of a fully independent foreign policy, devoid of the influence of continental alliances and great powers, quite uniqe in a Scandinavian context. Further more, Sweden became a driving force behind the UN in the 50's and 60's, personified by Dag Hamarsjold, the second in history General-Secretary of the UN and Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1961. Since then, Sweden has taken part in more UN and peace-keeping missions with more soldiers than any other Scandinavian county. Today, Swedish diplomatical prowess and technological clout among other things helps make Sweden a respected and influencial player in both inter-Scandinavian relations and the world stage. Sincerely OplotMira

The formulation was a bit bad, I'd admitt. Arent they Neutral?? Denmark has sent fare more troops then Sweden *** Sources please? Neutrality has never hindered Sweden to take part in actions under UN command in a wide range of hot-spots around the world. Sincerely OplotMira

Some facts about Nordic UN troops. Sweden have contributed in excess of 80000 UN troops over the years(since 1946). How many have the other Nordic ries contributed, I read that only Finland had sent more UN personnel than Sweden(although that might have been on recent years basis), Is this correct? Current UN forces: link UN poersonnel count for Scandinavian countries during May was: Denmark: 57 (13 combat troops). Norway: 54 (12 combat troops). Finland: 227 (201 combat troops). Sweden: 402 (333 combat troops).

In the first place, the UN is just one organisation for Denmark to send peacekeeping troops, and as the united nation is severely compromised in the peacekeeping role, I profesy that Danish participation will further diminish. The military side of the UN is so poorly led, that there are severe doubts in Denmark as to the use of it. If You want to say anything positive of the founding fathers of the UN, You should mention Lie (Norwegean) and Hermod Lannung (Dane). The problem about mentioning illustrious international Swedes is that they are not only dead, but they got assasinated. Charles XII was shot by his own, Dag Hamersköld shot out of the sky, Oluff Palme gunned down, Anna Lind stabbed.. shall I continue. Whatever the reason, those characters cannot be said to have gained overwhelming popularity and unequivivocal support for their way of thinking. It has for long been my contention, that Sweden is falling apart, as the only reason they survived was they were able to play the USA against the Soviet and vise versa. Today nobody cares what Sweden says.
