Subject: Shermans versus T34
Siddar    6/13/2004 3:37:51 PM
Ok ive had this view on sherman versus T34 for awhile and figure this is good place to share it with everybody.

Ive seen many people express view that T34 was so much better then the sherman that sherman versus T34 would have been a replay of shermans versus german heavys.

My view is that this is mistaken T34 was the better tank of the two but they were allot closer in ability against each other then many think.

My reference book on tanks lists the T34s max armor thickness as 60mm shermans as 100mm and german heavys from 100mm to 185mm depending on the type.

the shermans main weakness versus german tanks was a weak gun that couldnt make frontal kill on the thick frontal armor of many german types. The T34 had a better gun so could make frontal kills where sherman couldnt.

But the point many people miss is the weaker armor of T34 as compared to german tanks this weakness would have let shermans make frontal kill on T34 where as they couldnt make them against the german tanks.

This would have made fight between shermans and T34s allot closer then many people seem to think.
