Subject: Shaka Zulu and the Battle of Gqokli Hill 1818
swhitebull    8/13/2003 8:13:06 PM
Battle of Gqokli Hill - 1818, between the Zulus under Shaka, and the Ndwendwe under Zwide. More tactical innovations in this one battle on both sides, thrust and counterthrust, parry and counterparry than any I can remember.

The details of this battle are in Strategy and Tactics magazine 137, authored by James Dunnigan and Albert Nofi of this board. With their permission, I will reprint the description of the battle.

They summarize it in saying that this battle "proved Shaka to rank among the great battle captains of history...The amount of tactical innovation that occured in this one battle has to be a stunning revelation to all of us who are used to the pattern of Western military history; one battle , one innovation, one confused and defeated enemy.... compare Shaka's response ot the Ndwendwe columns of assault to Wellington's counter to the Imperial Guard's column of assault 3 years earlier at Waterloo! Now try to find a battle in western miitary history in which as much response and couterresponse occurred.." How's THAT for a teaser!!!

swhitebull- I will reprint the whole description if permission is granted by the authors. Its pretty cool! and plays well in miniatures.
