Subject: Have we seen the last conventional war?
AchtungLagg    5/6/2004 2:18:24 AM
With all the changes recently...have we seen the end to conventional war?
I.e. war between modernized nations, or even war between nations in general...or is that in the past, forever?
(i know using words such as "last" and "forever" are too general, however, the point should be emphasized, by these adjectives i mean except for small oubursts here or there, have we seen an end to major conventional conflict?

No. I'll give you good odds on there being another old fashioned conventional war in the next 3 years. Probably in africa.

Prometheus Bound    Is there still more than one person on Earth?   5/17/2004 7:14:06 PM
Is there still more than one person on Earth? Then there will be wars. The adjective conventional suggests non-nuclear ? As Einstein once said, the forth world war will be fought with sticks and stones (decidedly conventional) More to the point, it seems that most can agree that there will continue to be regional wars among nations without nukes (kinda like doctors without borders, but different). I think increasing populations and dimensioning resources will ensure that nations will continue to fight for precious bodies of water or fertile lands (Golan Heights anyone?) China and the US seem to be the only contenders to start a really big one, at least in the near future. One can?t rule out smaller hot-spots dragging everyone else along. Just think what would happen if Iran decided to have a go at the US forces in Iraq ? maybe the rest of the Arab world doesn?t join in, but maybe they do. I really think the only thing that will convince humans to stop fighting each other is to introduce a non-human enemy that everyone can fight.
