BL, no idea how old you are but did you study American Revolution in History at High School?  The majority of my knowledge on it comes from one Module in GCSE History many years ago now!!!

It's been quite a few years for me too, but yeah, we only covered it very briefly and most of it was tought in the wider European context. Most of my knowledge on it comes from American  studies and Western Civ courses I took in Florida. It was very interesting learning about it from the American perspective. I had to do my own research to get a more balanced view.

<snip>
I assume you're talking about the Hessian mercenaries (and other mercenaries from various other small German states). You're quite right, they did help us. If memory serves they made up about a quarter (maybe a third) of all British troops during the war. So yes, we had a few tiny German states provide us with aid... while you had France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic on yours.

Must confess ignorance on how the British hired "contract soldiers" during the Revolution. Was it prince to prince, or did the equivalent of the War Office back then, send agents to the continent and just hire regiments from cash astrapped principalities or did George III actually have German levies he could raise as a German elector?

well thank you man about that last part your country has a lot to be proud of  too.  now lets get back to the important issue.  everyone seems to think the USA has the best army the question is who should be number two

Alright mate, that's something we certianly can agree on! As for the number two Army, I'm reluctent to comment on that... my experience has shown those sorts of discussions remain civil for about 3 posts and then the preverbial shite starts to fly... I typically make it a policy to stay clear of those topics.

The Germans of course...they would use their superior military to raid Ireland and liberate all their liquor for their own consumption.....this is obvious to the most casual of observors.

As an Ulsterman I can tell you it would be hard fought battle!!!!  THings wouldnt look pretty the next morning for either the victor or teh vanquished.  However teh Irish skills are diminishing.  So in a few years the Germans might walk it!!!!  Im sure I read that teh most popular lager in Ireland is now Budweiser!!!!!!

Bear still remains the most popular drink in Germany and In Ireland whiskey is still very popular and Guinness comes in second.  So I think that Ireland will win the first half of the war but Germany's large amount of drunks will over run the Irish eventually so I think the Germans will win.

  I comepletely agree with Germany being number three. Considering it has the third largest economy, this gives them the proper amount of money and resources to make far superior weapons in comparison to everyone else (Besides America) They may not have as many weapons, but the ones they have are superior peaces of engineering.

 I've met some good guys in the German Army, but, there is no way that they are #3. A conscript force of Russo-German expatriots who don't want to be there is no fighting force, hense the reason that they're hiding on their bases in Northern Afghanistan along with the rest of their fellow Europeans. The Anglo armies dominate, US-UK-CAN-AUSSIE. That'a that.
