How does North Korea keep making these lists? The only military threat they are to anyone (aside from possible missile strikes) is South Korea and that's because their capitol is foolishly in range of the 40+ year old artillery pieces along the DMZ. The bulk of their equipment is old and out of date. They have critical fuel shortages. They have had no practical experience in the last 52 years. The only two things they really have going for them are numbers and perhaps motivation.

Calling the UK the second top military in the world is completely wishful thinking.

french stratege    air superiority is the prime factor to rank!   7/8/2004 3:32:35 PM
All conflicts have shown importance of achieving air superiority and protect your troops especially if they are less numerous, from WW2 to Kippour , to Lebanon in 82, to gulf war 1 or gulf war 2. Air superiority give freedom to bomb and is the most mobile artillery, antiship or antitank weapon! And the fastest to project! How can UK deserve a world rank second or even above Japaneses (which have 16 awacs and 300 F15j/F2) with an air force unable to take by its own air superiority agaisnt maybe the twelve better other air forces ?Their soldiers as good they can be, are not invisible and invulnerable!

France can't even move it's troops on it's own. You are getting very annoying starting these bloody pissing contests in every thread and I am sick of going over the same thing over and over again.

Then stop. France can move its own troops fine. UK may have a better capability to move its troops, but there is nothing to really support your claim. If france needed to heavily mobilize its forces, it would most likely be in europe for some reason, and moving its soldiers there, I see no problem. I don't see it needing to move a large amount of forces oversea's. Any time it would, which again is unplausible, could be supplemented by allies, which in a large overseas conflict would obviously be, because for that to happen it would need to be a large war. Of course, france most likely wont get in a large war. Who wants to mess with the fourth largest nuclear power and third most capable of delivering, in a large war?

These things have been and are getting very silly. The ability to wage war anywhere other than along the borders of ones own country is mostly gone. If it's all about "air superiority" then no one other than US with all its naval air power is even in the game against a country with a halfway competent airforce. Unless the country you are fighting is on your border. The UK and France both make these lists because as limited as their ability is, they still have the ability to take a fight to just about anywhere on the planet without help. That is not to say they could go invade Japan (because they couldn't) but they could take the fight there. While almost no one else has that ability. Plenty of countries have great armies for defending their own borders. You could create a huge list of countries that are unlikely to be sucessfully invaded but I don't think that alone sets them apart as one of top armies. It's the ability to go beyond sitting behind your own borders that seperates a military from the rather large pack of "can't successfully be invaded"

"Any time it would, which again is unplausible, could be supplemented by allies, which in a large overseas conflict would obviously be, because for that to happen it would need to be a large war." I agree. However it is just as implausable for the UK to face any air force that could seriously contest the RAF since non of them are potential enemies and most are allies. French Stratege though is ademant that France can do everything better than the UK. And constantly (since he arrived on this site) claims that the UK can't do anything without the US while France can. "UK may have a better capability to move its troops, but there is nothing to really support your claim." Yes there is, and I have posted it 4 or 5 times. Unfortunatley Strategypage overwrites posts when there are too many on the page so you probably haven't seen them.

I Have checked carefully your argument for moving troops and real possibilities including use of civilian means and reserve logistic fleet . We can count on FAF support if we have possibility to take a land (more likely an island to deploy) or if we are in the range of one of our territory or base abroad. It is the case for most of Europe, most of Africa (Dakar on west, Djibouti on east, La Reunion , Mayotte), Central america (antillas), east of Latin America (Guyana),South of midle east (Djibouti again), Asia (New caledonia as forward base) .For India area or Asia are whe have to take an island in WW2 style to field airforce. "However it is just as implausable for the UK to face any air force that could seriously contest the RAF since non of them are potential enemies and most are allies. " Maybe if Argentina is not willing to redo falkland or Spain Gibraltar (unlikely),or Belize to be threatened or a major incident happened somewhere in the world against UK interest. If you have no threat you can spare some money! In fact if only UK interest are at stake like in Falkland I doubt that US or any european Nation would help you in providing troops. France have more power to inflict reprisals alone or to project force alone than UK in this case against an adversary with a minimal aviation. In fact our forces are well suited to project in Africa were we can field bases in a lot of countries, or middle east.

french stratege    joe6pack: worldwide fighting   7/8/2004 5:11:50 PM
So if we decide like that, we could say: 1:US first 2:Then france, UK and Russia with ability to fight everywhere and inflict strong classical or nuclear reprisals(with different capabilities) 3:Then India, Japan is the next list (navy and have nukes or can have immediately nukes) 4:Then Germany (airborne, SM2 destroyer , type212)and Italy (navy). Both can have nukes quickly. 5:Then Spain and China

French - Yes, I pretty much agree with that list. It makes a lot more sense to me to make that type of comparison over what has become the "What if" wars where the two potential enemies have no way of reaching one another.

What happens when your bases are hit first? Even with air bases nearby you're struggling just to with the cost of hiring the ships. How about you give me a list of countries that could realistically appose the RAF? "The debate was on transporting troops on a other country: Amphibious operation or progressive fielding like in Iraq agaisnt a threat of an air force with 100/200 fighter with a moderate number of Mig29/Su27 or F16. The british argument was we could not protect our deploiement by sea against opposing air force. I said it was not the case and we were similar to this regard and I proved it whatever you thought.Sorry for British over pride." Since when does the UK need help in providing troops? You're starting to just string random words together now.
