According to the CIA and other Intelligence Services (European, Asian, African) this is the tally - based on a Combination of Manpower, Technology, Firepower, Training, Resources, Available Reserves, and Nuclear Potential (Current or Likely): 1. USA 2. China 3. Germany 4. India 5. France 6. Russia 7. UK 8. Italy 9. Israel 10. Pakistan

Your actually wrong, in part it is due to the fact that boeing wishes to expand it's business in the UK and the fact that BAE Systems wish to expand in the USA coupled with domestic procurement delivery problems that have sparked talks of a mutual merger between the two companies. BAE Boeing Aerospace?

BAE Boeing Aerospace? Thats a terrible name. They should rename themselves 'Vickers Supermarine.' It's available again.

My point was that maintaining the Monarchy maintains the illusion that Britain is still a Great Power. The fact that most Brits, according to you, approve of the Monarchy only proves my point.

"My point was that maintaining the Monarchy maintains the illusion that Britain is still a Great Power. The fact that most Brits, according to you, approve of the Monarchy only proves my point " That makes no sense. The monarchy is a huge part of the country's history and brings in money and helps with charities. They have nothing to do with power. What about other countries that have monarchies?

i wouldn't say the monarchy has no power. they can refuse to sign laws into existance in england which is power of a sort. they carry great weight with a lot of people both as head of the anglican church and as symbols of the country. they can summarily dismiss a number of heads of state. for instance the queen dismissed an australian prime minister. do not mistake reluctance to use power for being powerless.

I just asked because I thought your quip about tradition and the parrot was hilarious and usually don't find Americans to be that humerous (please, Americans, no offense intended - it's cultural). I've been to Cork and didn't find the city itself that wonderful but wasn't there that long. County Cork is nice (is Killarney in the county?). Really nice folk in your country - the whole of Ireland I mean.

I thought you made some good points in your last post but German manufacturing has prospered despite Asian Tigers like Japan and S. Korea having made inroads into the sector. There are a number of articles you might find interesting in the latest Economist that are relevant to our discussion. One of them does say that on current trends, the UK's GDP would meet Germany's in 2030 and I suspect it's the one you refer to. I'd remain suspect about 30 year economic predictions. I suppose we'll both just have to wait and see.

I didn't mean they weren't powerless I meant that they have nothing to do with keeping any "power status" as Arditi seems to think.

-And Arditi, the point being made is that the UK is generally the second most powerful nation on Earth when considering the proportionate factors of economic and military abitities and performance and that would translate into being a Great Power and if not state why not and who is, who other than America can match the UK on the general level of power?
