Subject: Photo thread ... 20 years of disbanding the Antifacist Protection Wall
Nasty German Idiot     10/12/2009 5:24:12 PM
... sadly there is no Germany section in this forum. However, were dealing with a sort of "military" object and I think it thus somehow fits here.

The fact that I've heard so little about German unification over the past few years must mean that I either have far more limited sources of international news than I should, or, the Germans have managed this incredible effort with real skill and political maturity.

Either way, great post.

Great post.

I vividly remember crossing Checkpoint Charlie in 88. What has become of it?

It seems so odd to me these days about how young people have no grasp of the cold war whatsoever. This is the case in the U.S. I have to wonder if it's like that there as well. Given how the marks all seem to be going away, I would almost expect so.

Checkpoint Charlie during the Cuba Crisis  (you see the Soviet Tanks that face the US tanks in the background)

This is how the street looks today. (not much left of anything besides a sign and a sandsack barrier marking the Spot.   But there is a Checkpoint Charlie Museum directly located on the spot round the corner.  A quite good one I might add, because they have lots of historical stuff from people who fled the wall in balloons, boats, a full, self armored  truck that someone used (successfully) to break through a Checkpoint and so on ...

It shows a Russian soldier from the western and an American soldier from the eastern side so that you know from which direction you are looking.

Thanks for the amazing images.  It looks like the physical scars are gone but I wonder about the non physical effects.  All those people who worked for the Stasi, people spying on each other including family members and neighbors.   One wonders about the psyche of the people who were part of the state machinery and those who were damaged by the system.
