Any thoughts on this? Does anyone think a detachment of SF types were held at a high state of readiness to go help? What other "special" procedures or personnel/equipment were on hand during his 10 weeks in theater?

SF types?  What are they going to provide that the Scimiters can't?

As much as I respect 'SF types', I think the Taliban hold far more respect for tanks, .50 cals, GPMG's and JDAM's.

according to one news report i watched there was a ghurka platoon camped scant few metres from his bedroll.  may not be SAS but they'd do in a pinch i expect.

Er since he was in a FOB operated by Gurkhas (out of Brunei - the Sultan is doing his bit here) it's not surprising.  I'd guess the reason this FOB was selected is because there was less likelihood of an idiot with a mobile phone camera.  Taliban haven't managed to get into any UK FOB yet, doesn't really matter whether it's a Brit or Gurkha coy group there in terms of fighting capability.

I've heard that Brunei has a Gurkha battalion.  Are they actually British army and British equipped, but based there as the result of some colonial agreement (as in 1/2 RGR?) or are they more departed than that now?

According to Wiki:
A battalion of the RGR is permanently stationed in Brunei, paid for by the Sultan of Brunei at a cost of approximately £40,000,000 per year

Forty million pounds a year?  Do they have solid gold rifles or something?

that's only about 27k pounds a year per man given there are 1500 odd souls in/attached to the battalion so it's not exactly exorbitant.  i've also read he has a personal bodyguard unit of retired british ghurkas.  uneasy lies the head that wears the crown and all that.

1,500 persons?  How many companies does this battalion have?  Even if it had HQ, A B C D and Support, that still only produces half that number.  And the vast majority of those soldiers, Riflemen and JNCO's, earn half 27k a year!

Admin, air support like the Bell 212, support staff, food, facilities, maintenance, ammunition and training costs will all add to the cost and are not insignificant.

Surely things like external support staff and helicopters et al are paid for in the budget of their particular units?

To be based there, they must have a base. A base must have support staff.
