Subject: Female needs advice on buying a handgun
NavyGator    9/9/2007 11:56:14 PM
I'm a 23 year old female, in college and the military who needs some advice on purchasing a handgun. I've had experience with a wide range of weapons, .50 cals, shotguns, sniper rifles, an old German luger, and some old loud heavy handguns. I want this gun for personal safety as well as target practice. I don't want anything that will make me too deaf to call 911 if I have to, and I don't want a big kick either. I already know that a .22 or a .25 is too small for me. Everytime I go to look at purchasing a firearm they try to push those two on me and I don't like them. I have a very small grip but I'm stromg enough to handle a gun safely and accurately. I want something reliable, accurate, and comfortable. It will get use. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In my area a number of ranges have handguns for rent. Renting lets you see what you like and don't like. I found I liked .45's better then 9mm's. A lot of gun stores (not all) are more interested in selling you a gun then in selling you the right one.
You may also consider putting a laser on the gun. Seeing a little red dot on there chest scares bad guys a lot.

Even though I'm only 13 I've studied weapons a lot and I'd say either a .45 semi auto or a .357 revolver.

The others made some good suggestions to. There's also the .38 revolver a Tec-9 even though it's more like an smg. There's the M9 Berretta the Glock 17s and 19s. Sigs are good but I'd assume they cost a lot since sig weapons are known to be used by SF people like MFRs Rangers Green Berets and Navy Seals.

A new Sig probably runs $800 or more, depending on which particular make and model.  More than a new Glock, but about what a new HK would run, or an above-entry level kind of 1911.

Used, though, they can be had in very good condition for $5-600.

Buy a Para-Ordinance P-14 Limited. It is the unquestioned best value available for the money!
It is .45 which means that it can shoot every thing from 185 grain HPs at 770FPS to super pressure loads that will drop a moose! The light loads recoil less than any 9MM service pistol which will not work with low pressure loads like .45s do. It is accurate enough to shoot in the National Matches and reliable enough to shoot rings around most 9MMs.
Your small hands are only a problem of perseption and once you get used to the fat grip, you will never go back.

My expertise; I taught people how to shoot, including women for big money on contract to various forign governments.
