Subject: Glock v. XD
RockyMTNClimber    7/30/2007 8:12:21 PM
I own a Glock 19 which I really like, and a Springfield XD .45, in Duty model. (4"barrel) I really like both guns and so far have found the XD to match the range performance of the Glock. I am not aware of any departments or agencies that are using any of the XD models currently but in my limited universe I have found the XD to be a pretty good performer. 13 rounds of .45 ACP +P is a quite potent side arm. The XD .45 takes advantage of the molded frame to reduce the size of the magazine well. It is very close in grip size to my Glock-19 with .45 ACP power. It also has a additional safty that the Glock models do not have with the grip safety (could that drop the reliability factor? by raising the complexity?) Has anyone else had experience with the XD? I am heading out to a bowling pin shooting tournament next weekend and the XD is going to take the place of my usual pin dropper, a Colt Python. Check Six Rocky

RockyMTNClimber    Glock 21 v. XD .45   8/1/2007 12:06:12 PM
It hardly seems fair to compare the XD .45 to the Glock-19 in terms of concealment. A better comparison would be the G-21 (to get to 13+1 rounds). The G-21 has awful ergonomics compared to the XD IMV.

On concealment, I bought a Kramer inside the belt holster as well as a Galco hip holster for my XD. These do a good job of covering the XD with appropriate shirt/coat. Better I think than the comparable Glock.

I totally agree with you about the fairness of the comparison. It's just that the XD is the last gun I bought so I tried to get as much out of it as possible! I just bought a Miami Classic(black) for my Army issued M9 9mm which is a BIG pistol as you know. So maybe I'll try that for the XD. I never really used shoulder holsters before. I prefer IWB with small slim auto's because its really concealable and quick to access. However, my new experiences with the shoulder holster is making me want to try it with the XD. The shoulder rig allows easy access to my 9 in case some local national tries to steal something off of my truck or a threat is too close to use crew serve weapons and I need to shoot out of a window or hatch. When I drive back home I can use the XD the same way without resorting to an uncomfortable belt or IWB holster. Of course all of this applies to the G19 as well. It too is a little largish and heavy for IWB ALL DAMN DAY type scenarios.

I concur completely about the G21. Its not ergonomically correct for people who dont have big hands.

I feel the same way but its the only option for now. IWB and belt holsters are in the way of my IBA and thigh rigs take away cargo pockets and are hard to get to inside a vechicle. For that reason I mount my pistol on my IBA or when I'm not in an IBA I use a shoulder holster. I have really come to like the Miami Classic. Very comfortable and rather sharp looking. The draw isn't that slow either.

Sort of off topic, but what do you guys feel about the 10mm round? I know Glock has the G20 and the G29, but never fired one. Hows the kick, terminal ballistics, etc?

I'm pretty new to shooting the 10mm round (picked up a 10mm 1911 for a woods gun), but would pretty much echo ChdNorm's sentiments.  I really like that you can shoot loads ranging from 40S&W kind of power levels that match some of the magnum revolver cartridges.  As for recoil, I haven't found anything I've shot yet to be all that bad, though I have not tried any of the "nuclear" loads yet that are pushing 180-230 grain loads fast enough to get over 700 foot pounds (nor refitted the pistol with heavier springs and modified firing pin stop to shoot them).

If you're interested in checking out the round, probably the cheapest way to get into it is getting a Tanfoglio (EAA Witness) 10mm -- Italian made CZ clone, usually good quality, available for a price that makes even Glocks seem spendy (under $400).
