From the "here we go again department" ht***tp://fs1.fbo.gov/EPSData/USAF/Synopses/1202/FA8520-07-R-15490/RFI4-16-07Final.pdf The Airforce has tendered a RFP for a new handgun. This appears to be a similar request to the one that was shot down in 2006. Cast my vote in the bigger is better crowd, as well as a supporter of taking advantage of new technologies. Perhaps a nice Glock or XD for America's finest? Check Six Rocky

My guess is that they program will fizzle unless it can piggyback a larger effort (like USASOC's ongoing efforts to replace the Beretta).

This program has a better chance then you might think.

Airforce security forces rarely carry pistols. They've got M-4s. The people who get top priority when it comes to recieving pistols just happen to be... (drumroll please) Pilots. Yep, pilots carry pistols in the eventuality that they are shot down. And of course, the airforce is by and large run by pilots. The only other people who routinely carry sidearms in the AF, just happen to be SOCOM troops (AFSOCOM,PJs, TACP, Combat control, and many others) Between the two commingled groups, there is a lot of military political firepower.

What pilots and SOCOM want, Pilots and SOCOM usually get.
