Subject: Sidearms in the military, optional or not?
HYPOCENTER    9/25/2006 10:58:49 PM
I was wondering, if you're in the US military do you have the option of picking whatever side-arm you want.... I mean, if you wanted to use something other than the Baretta, could you? If not, why not, and are there any 'loopholes' that would allow one to carry something other than the Baretta? For instance, if I wanted to carry something rediculious and impractical, like the .500 S&W or .454 Casull, purely for status, could I?

My cousin is a captain so he probably gets a little leeway.

We actually usually expect officers to toe the line about uniform regulations and other military silliness.  Lead by example and all that.

If a shiny revolver gets a crowd to quiet down with having to be used, then go for it.  Like I said, his first sergeant's 12 gauge pump shotgun gets a lot of attention too.  I don't care what language you speak there are three universal sounds that everyone knows....  a Harley Davidson, a 12 gauge racking a round into the chamber, and a pistol being thumb-cocked.

i know that special forces guys  can carry thier own weapons but still have to qual with m9's most of them carry some kind of accurized 45acp usually based off the 1911. the difference is enormose for them since the m9 is a peice of junk, its amzing more guys aren't killed from slide failures and most of them are so worn out they shot like a slingshot.

Not quite black & white. I served between Desert Storm & Iraq/Afgan conflict, EOD, 82nd Airborne, & then onward. When getting ready to leave stateside, I went to my CO, & actually asked because trying to move around in a blast suit isn't a walk in the park to begin with, much less with an M9 on your side, & I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE DOUBLE TAP firing due to small cartridge - I grew up hunting with Pops. Squirrel - limit 5 a day, .22 rifle with 5 rounds. One shot one kill, plus the horrible DA first shot trigger pull weight & travel. Anyway, I asked if there were other options. There are. I have seen Sig's, HK's, tricked out 1911's, & tricked out Berettas. I recq'ed an HK USP .45 - tons lighter & cocked & locked for consistent trigger pull. I wore it IWB (inside waistband) secured to my belt, under the blast jacket. Shed hands (gloves), & go at it. Dad carried a surplus Smith & Wesson Model 10, .38 Special in Vietnam (Purple Heart - 45 years later still has pieces of each of the 7 rounds in him), his pilot carried a 1911, & no crap, his NCO carried a Colt SAA .45 Long Colt with the birdhead grip, crossdraw on his belt. Got the pictures to prove it, lol. Bottom line, check your MOS' details, check with your NCO, CO, &/OR Armory, to see what your options may be. Personally seen fallen allies & enemy combatants have their weapons used against them. Yup, EVERYBODY...SAS, FORMOZA, & even the Spetsnaz, in combat, PROMISE, NO ONE'S GOING TO GIVE CRAP < WHERE YOU PICKED WHAT UP IF IT'S HELPED YOU & YOUR COMPANY SURVIVE & MAKE IT TO SAFETY.
