Subject: Girly gun question
Cato    1/16/2006 4:19:47 PM
I'm investigating the purchase of a home firearm. The one criteria for said purchase is that the weapon must be easily usable by a rather small and not particularly mechanically inclined chick. So, sorry guys, the Desert Eagle .50 and broomhandle Mauser are out of the question. I'm thinking of a wheel-gun rather than one of the small-framed autos. Any suggentions regarding calibre and make/model would be greatly appreciated. Personal experience with reccommended weapon would also be greeted with many thanks. Thankee kindly, Cato

Good points, one and all. I'd love to start a Glock collection, but I feel that "boxy, black things" would be discovered all over the crib, as I'm none too bright hiding such things. Thought about getting a lever gun, but size does indeed matter. This weapon would be for me as much for anybody else, but must be usable by somebody else. As I said, gunbattles don't occur in this neck of L.A., so I don't think that a large cap. automatic is necessary, or even practical. If I was really worried about defending my home, I'd have a large pitt-bull/akita crossbreed, and feed it gunpowder. I'd say the sound of that beats the cycling of a twelve gauge hands down. Nope, just looking for a caliber and gun that can be fired by a small handed 5"5 chick, but can provide me with the visceral pleasure of sweetly savoring my 2nd Amendment rights. I really appreciate the feedback, and concerns voiced. Thanks, Cato

Cato Try to find a range that will let you rent or fire different models.Have her take a firearms safety course.Smith&Wesson have a lot of safety features if price is a concern Taurus makes nice firearms with the same safety features.Does your state issue carry permits? If so Get one even if your going to keep it in the house. This is a big decission make sure you both know the laws of your state on the use of deadly force and are properly trained on the firearms you purchase. If you have children expose them to firearms let them see it and handle it with your supervision this takes the curiosity out of it.Keep it out of there reach/locked kids find everything.

There is something to be said for 3 or 4 cans of pepperspray, a good stun gun, with spare batteries, a fishwhacker (bought a nice carbon-fiber one a few years ago in the fishing section at Sport Mart, really) and a phone. As pepperspray is non-lethal and short-ranged, there should be much less reluctance or hesitation in using it. The stun gun is for escalation. Both are usually either well within local laws, or can be with the proper paperwork. I always vote for the "I call, they haul" option. The police are always glad to oblige, problem children usually "recognize", or do so after a spanking or two, and I remain in a state of tranquility. As far as guns go, my advice is in line with several of the previous posts. Yimmy’s point of a lever-action should be seriously considered. Lever action rifles are easier to verifyably aim than most hand guns, cycling the lever will get attention, they can be reloaded with little effort, they look more like a hunting rifle than a military weapon, and they can be had, new, for $319.

>>Nope, just looking for a caliber and gun that can be fired by a small handed 5"5 chick, but can provide me with the visceral pleasure of sweetly savoring my 2nd Amendment rights. I really appreciate the feedback, and concerns voiced.<< The Walther P-22 is a pretty sweet little plinker sort of pistol -- .22 LR, ten round magazines, pretty fun (and cheap) to shoot, resembles a 3/4 scale P-99 (though only superficially, innards are completely different). It's not a bad "gateway drug" sort of firearm, either, since it shares magazines with the G-22 bullpup rifle and does tend to turn one's thoughts to getting a P-99 if one enjoys shooting it . . .

Lrsrng, I live in Los Angeles County, the very apotheosis of gun control laws doing nothing to curb gun violence. The permit system is an absolute mess, and the only person I personally know that packs heat (not an LEO) is a former judge. I might have an easier time than most, as I'm in EMS, but none of my co-workers or any of the firefighters I work with pack. No kids live anywhere near. Arbalest, I feel you, my brother. They say guns don't solve problems, but the 26 inch aluminum softball bat that sleeps next to the bed sure does.As I said, if I was really concerned about safety, I'd have a couple of bad-ass pooches. Not under any illusions as to the ease of using lethal force. Besides, with L.A.s finest a mere three digits on the phone away, why get blood on my floor, when the back of a squad car cleans up so much easier? Horsesoldier, I actually saw the Walther today at the local armouror. SWEEEEEEEEEEEET. I think that I'm gonna stick with a .22 or .25. The dealer was pushing the Taurus 9mm, and the .38. Are these basically the same round (9mm)? All the people I know who own sidearms are into the more testicularly driven variety. Kimber is popular along with the ubiquitous HK und Sig. For the modest needs of this houshold .25 sounds about right. Besides, no matter what you get shot with...getting shot sucks d!ck. Thanks once again everybody! Cato

>>I actually saw the Walther today at the local armouror. SWEEEEEEEEEEEET.<< Yeah -- I have a P-99 in 9mm and a P-22 and both are excellent weapons. >>The dealer was pushing the Taurus 9mm, and the .38. Are these basically the same round (9mm)?<< Bullet diameter is essentially identical (+/- 0.002 inches . . .), though 38 Special is generally somewhat more anemic than 9x19mm. >>All the people I know who own sidearms are into the more testicularly driven variety. Kimber is popular along with the ubiquitous HK und Sig.<< Good guns all of them . . . usually with price tags to match . . . though, speaking from personal experience, spending too long in a gun store holding a Kimber Warrior tends to make one start doing financial acrobatics and reprioritizing . . .

I think you/she will be dissappointed with the smaller calibs. Shooting a drugged-up intruder with a 22 or 25 is not likely to knock him down. I was intriged about the small diam / high veloc 5.7 when it came out. Probably too expensive and restricted in the US right now though. What a police friend of mine did suggest is the 357 SIG.

Second to all the shotgun comments for home defense. If this is not an option then remember the purpose of shooting is hitting; and a vital (key word) hit from a .22 magnum revolver will beat a miss from a .357 magnum, unless the noise and flash of the .357 just scares off the badguy. That has worked but it's not a good tactic to count on. Downside? A .22 magnum is a surgical weapon. The better half has to understand that, barring a CNS hit, a .22 magnum is probably not going to make a badguy fall down; harm can come to her in the time it takes the badguy to bleed out. There are no perfect answers. Although generally speaking, the less said about the .25 ACP the better.

The simpler, the better. While I own many handguns, the one I keep in my bedstand at night is a S&W Mod66. 4" barrel. It's simple, rugged, accurate, and heavy enough that recoil with .38+P hollows is moderate at best. I insisted that my wife learn to shoot it, and she's perfectly comfortable with it. I chose a wheelgun because, in an emergency, simple is best. No safety levers to deactivate, no trying to remember whether a round is chambered or not, no making sure the magazine is seated all the way up in the mag well. Just point and click.

Good point about the home defense involving dogs, Cato. As Massad Ayoob states, a gun should only be the very, very last line of defense in a whole system of prevention/deterrence that incorporates proper outdoor lighting, knowledge of neighbors, locks on windows and doors, alarms of various kinds, and of course, man's best friend. I feel more secure at night not because of the pistol in my room, but because of the unfriendliness of my two dogs. They're very mouthy and stranger-phobic dogs. As far as having a fun little plinker, Horsesoldier recommended the P22. May I also recommend a Ruger Mark II in .22LR. These are the guns which put Ruger on the map, and they're an American classic. Very ergonomic, easy to use, and shoot like a dream. A feeling of fine, old-world qaulity.
