wondering which one is better,stg44 is FIRST assault rifle in the world but it probably had some important drawbacks altough it was both accurate and could fire full auto.m1 carbine has a nice rate of fire too as far as i know.which one do you think is better and say why?

Didn't they give the Montagnards M1 carbines? Most likely the Viet Cong used them against Colonial French as well.

"There was a collapsible stock M1 Carbine which was issued to US airborne units for Normandy, but these were used by RTOs, mortar men, etc." Odd. I always thought the carbine was the primary weapon of the US paratroops. Too tired to wals across the room & look it up.

In Bing West's "The Village" he mentions how most of the firefights between the CAP platoon and the local force VC were basically carbine duels (though the American members of the CAP eventually got M16s with experimental M203s or some similar sort of 40mm grenade launcher).

The M1 Garand was their primary infantry weapon. The only weapon whose use they were non-standard with was the BAR, which they were not authorized until very late in 1944 because it was very difficult to jump with. Of course, actual weapons carried could vary a good deal as individuals seem to have had a relatively easy acquiring whatever they wanted to carry compared to the modern military.

>>Speaking of being on the receiving end of StG-44 fire, a number of them have been captured in Iraq. Apparently hand me downs from the Soviets to the Syrians and on to the Iraqi insurgents.<< Source of your information? Photos?

>>The M1 was in .300 Winchester....not a very powerful round<< The US .30 caliber M1 carbine used a .30 caliber [7.62x33] round, that was not interchangeable with the .30 caliber M1 Garand rifle. The .30 caliber carbine round was designated the Cartridge, Caliber .30, Carbine, Ball, M1. It was a straight-case, rimless design with round-nose bullet weighting 110 grains (7.1 grams) and muzzle velocity of 1860 fps. The US M1 carbine has never used the .300 Winchester round.

>>Source of your information? Photos? << As noted in one of the posts, I first heard about StG-44s in Iraq in one of the gun rags a while back -- I'm not recalling title or issue, but on the off chance it is still residing on someone's desk where I work I'll shoot you a solid citation after the holiday. In the meantime, with a bit of googling, you can see a couple of pics here: link About midway down the page is a guy doing you classic "monkey waving gun defiantly in air in front of poster" pose, with al-Sadr on the poster behind him, and a bit further down is a guy shooting one on the range that is said to be in Iraq (though you can't really verify it from the photo, even if the guy is in DCUs and sporting a Safariland 6004 drop leg holster, etc.). Google also turned up a number of sites where some guy was discussing photos from taking an Iraqi StG-44 to the range after marrying up captured weapon, magazines, and ammunition from various sources, but none of the links I saw still work, though it sounds like an interesting photo series . . .

Probably the stg44, it was fully auto which was often the winning factor in WW2 CQB. Also it would have been more powerful. You do here many stories of US troops not being happy with the M1 carbine because it lacked power and they preferd the standard M1 rifle.

One of my father's comments about the M-1 Carbine in Korea was "If you wanted to keep their heads down, you fired the carbine. If you wanted to hurt them, you threw rocks. They worked better" The rest weren't so kind, and mostly laced with profanity. I'd have to say the German piece was the better weapon, even if you did throw the M-2 (F/A M-1) into the mix.

not that I am advocating doing anything wrong, but boy-howdy, I would love the opportunity to get my hands on a stg-44...mmmmmmmmm stg-44(homer simpson sound droiling over a donut)--- one day while on patrol in somalia, we came across an old man sitting on top of a car with a mint-condition m-14. It was beautiful. No rust. No dings in the wood-anywhere...The sling was clean. The proper amount of oiling. The action was pure music.....mmmmmmmmm all capture/seized/found weapons were stored. A few days later I went back to see it, but it was gone!!!! I was told with a 'wink,' noone knew what happened to it, esp the lt incharge of the weapons!!!!!!
