Subject: Fifty caliber rifles
WinsettZ    2/3/2005 3:11:27 PM
There are those weird kits that attach to AR-10s and M-16s that have some sort of low power or shortened .50 cartridge or .499 or whatever. How do said rifles perform in tests?

I was more thinking about the military use of these "shortened" high-caliber rounds then rifles firing .50 BMG, 12.7mm (Soviet), 14.5mm, and so on.

Out of a semi auto Barrett, I would have no qualms about using it for self defense at Jurassic park..... kinda overkill for a lot of things and maybe not enough for a few big bads. was i choosing i think i would like an FAL with an hk69 gl with hedp rounds. the fn should stop anything up to a ton or so and the hedp should be adequately distracting to let you put some rounds someplace vital in anything bigger. plus the package is a fair bit handier if fang and claw pop out to the rear or flanks.

What would be the maximum range that the best .50BMG rifle can be garanteed to put round after round into a 16 inch circle?

Don't know but I think it was Skip Talbot that shot a 5.5" group at 1000yds in a compatition.

Officially the accuracy of most .50 calibers is about 1 MoA, so at hitting 16 inch groups at 1600 meters is what would be expected. I've never fired anything like a .50 BMG, so I wouldn't know from experience how easy it is to actually hit something. If you've got a lot of training and your target isn't moving, however, I'd assume you could hit at longer distances than that (the two Canadian snipers who got kills at 2400+ meters would probably have had a target about or a little larger than 16 inches wide).

Thanks! I've read of the relative accuracy merits of the .223 Remington (5.56mm NATO) and the .308 Winchester (7.62mm NATO) rounds since they are said to have generally better inherent accuracy. I was just wondering how the .50 BMG would stack up in comparison.

Why does everyone like the 50. bmg so much.If i had a choice i'd go with the 12.7 mm soviet or even better the 14.5 mm(kill an elphant at 1000 yards through 4 inches of steel that one will.) And the M6 its chambered in Ummm...wuts the english equivalent of awwwhhhwwh oh exquisite.Ive heard claims of it shooting 8/10 of an inch and in a semi auto none the less.
