Subject: Fifty caliber rifles

There are those weird kits that attach to AR-10s and M-16s that have some sort of low power or shortened .50 cartridge or .499 or whatever. How do said rifles perform in tests?

Are tou talking about the .50 beowulf or a full size .50 calibre upper that fits on any ar/15 lower receiver? Both seem like good ideas to me. With the .50 beowulf they use a 7.62x39 bolt and they change out the barrel to take the beowulf round. It gives you the capability to shoot a dozen or so rounds out of a regular ar-15 of about 300-400 grain bullets moving around 2000 fps. It should be a wonderful set-up to take bear, buffalo, t-rex or whatever. A few companies are putting full size .50 cal bmg ammo uppers, on top of the ar-15 lowers that are capable of hitting targets hundreds of yards away. Most of these are single shoots, but I have seen some with sideways, (horizontal) 5 round magazines. All are bolt action, afaik. This makes perfect since to me, (if the lowers can handle the greater recoil). Any one familiar with m16/ar15 type rifles would be able to use it. If I ever win the lottery, (sigh)............

towgunner, your link died. Anyways: What's the difference, except that the one is a 12.5x42 and the other is a 12.7 in a .223 case? I dont think the AFJ people got around to their 1v1 shootout, have they?

The .50 with the rebated rim using the 7.62x39 bolt looks like a .50 caliber case. Maybe .45 caliber. Theres no way they could squeeze a .50 bullet into a .223 case. The other .50 I was thinking of is the same bullet ma duece uses, 12.7 mm. It is a much more powerful round than the beowulf. Out of a semi auto Barrett, I would have no qualms about using it for self defense at Jurassic park.......

Mmm, .50 BMG. I posted more or less mentioning shortened .50s or .499s in the original and didnt think that .50 would come up in the thread. Wouldn't recoil be pretty bad?

I,ve never shot a .50 bmg rifle, but on all the articles I,ve read, they all claim the recoil is no worse than a 12 gauge shotgun. This is due to those big a$$ muzzle brakes they put on them....

I've only heard the twelve-gauge claim for the Barrett "Light Fifties". I'm wondering what their place could be in the military. They're definitely not as powerful as the .50 BMG AMRs. They probably couldnt do anti-materiel as most of their anti-materiel effect comes from armor penetration, a function of velocity. They'd be lacking in magazine capacity too. I'm interested in if the Coast Guard has tested them on boats yet, and how they've done...

The Barrett "light" fifties, shoot the same round as the m2 heavy machinegun. They have destroyed bmps during desert storm...
