Does anyone know whether this is a plean sheet of paper project or based upon either the AR or P90? I haven't been able to pull anything out of the land of google on the subject.

Its not going to be based on the P90, and I doubt it will be based on the M16. I'll put good money on it being based on the FN F2000. Look that rifle up if you haven't heard of it, pretty sweet little rifle. All FN had to do was make it multi-cal and they got the contract. I wish IMI had made a version of the Tavor TAR-21 like that, but then again, we'd never buy an IMI rifle to start with for political (read: BS) reasons.

From www.defensereview.com "DefRev Scoop! FN Herstal SCAR/SOFCAR Competition Winner and Modified XM8 by David Crane david@defensereview.com This just in: DefenseReview has been told by one of its sources that FN Herstal's SCAR/SOFCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) competition winner utilizes an updated/upgraded FN FNC upper w/M1913 Picatinny rail system, mated to a modified M4/M4A1 Carbine-config/type lower receiver. Supposedly, the M4/M4A1 Carbine-type lower features an HK M4 carbine-style flared mag well. At this point, this information is unconfirme/unverified. In other words, it's just a rumor. However, if it's true, it makes some sense. The FN FNC assault rifle is a proven system that's known to be reliable under adverse conditions. It's based on the AK-47/AKM (Kalashnikov) operating system, which can handle dirt, mud, sand, etc., no problem. The only negative DefRev's ever heard about the FN FNC is that the firing pin tends to break prematurely, but this problem can be easily corrected. This story is still developing, as new information comes in. "

Looking at photos of the FN F2000 gives me the impression of a weighty trumpet case, but then as we all know looks aren't what matter. I've always thought that the layout of the P90 had a lot going for it. A model adapted to handle either one of the new 6.X rounds or 7.62X39 or the old 5.56 would be something interesting to put head to head with the SCAR proposal requirements. From what I've seen of the IMI Tavor TAR-21, including a section on the History Channel, it looks like a good piece of kit. I read somewhere that the US subsidiary of IMI was going to build part of it in the US so that it could be covered by US military aid. I should think that IMI could do a credible redesign of the Tavor that would fit the bill if it was deemed a worthwhile exercise. As is, the barrel length that the Tavor allows for in it's layout eliminates the velocity/terminal effects problem of 5.56 in carbine length arms. As for convertable calibers, for regular troops, the real issue if the effectiveness of the round/system. If 5.56 won't cut it as is, either fix the round or go to something else. The reverse with the system. I understand the reasoning behind the 5.56 and have seen enough ad nauseum pro and con about it and rival rounds that I won't start that debate up in this thread. The demands and needs, let alone budgeting, of the SOF community is such that whatever tools they want should be gotten to them without doing a "McNamara" on them.

Thanks fo that, I hadn't seen this yet. So basiclly what it sounds like is an updated/redressed of Stoner's AR-18. Makes sense since it would be all FN patents involved. The firing pin issue just sounds sloppy to me. As long as it works as needed that's all that counts I guess.

Well, I've seen photos and descriptions on several sites and the FN entry in a mix of a special mod FNC upper, whatever flavor caliber, and an AR lower body. No indication yet on the guts inside of the lower.
