Subject: Barrett 25mm rifle, fact or mith
Bigbro    5/23/2004 10:17:50 PM
I had heard through the grapevine that barrett was working on a 25mm rifle based on the M-82. Is there any thing to this or is this just an gun nut mith?

Right now only the TPT and HEAP rounds are available. There are plans to produce an impact fused HEDP which will be compatable with the OCWS, if it makes it off the boards, as well as a High Explosive Airburst (HEAB) round that will work with an advanced sighting system and be proximity fused. Both the HEDP and HEAB are supposed to have a 3m killing radius with a 5m radius of effect.

The HEDP round has been redesigned with a second bursting charge. This drops the range to 800m because of the weight increase and the round becomes sub-sonic around 500m. While slower and with shorter range, it is much more accurate than the 40mm round and the second charge gives it a greater bursting radius. It has a killing radius of 10m and a radius of effect of 18m.

I think this system would have potential for something like the Stryker, which lacks a truly effective anti-material weapons aside from dismounted Javelins/AT-4s. Maybe a version modified with a larger magazine and mounted in the RWS with a coax.
