This is for the folks that have a background in terminal ballistics. Cube root of weight in pounds X 5.13 = velocity at impact (fps) X bullet weight (grains) / 7000 Graph log-log If fps @ impact < 2000 fps then bullet diameter must be > .355? Expansion or yaw of bullet required. Compare to minimum required to produce incapacitating wound, in antidotal observations and popular texts. Data set 1 to 10,000 pounds.

my ballistics skills are rusty, and not very advanced; i have no material at hand for calculations and comparison to a data set. however, your results seem about right.

My math is shaky, at best. My usual method of computing FPE is as follows; Divide bullet wt. (gr.)/7000, square that, multiply x (velocity squared), hit equal twice, divide by 64.32 (2x acc. of gravity at Earth's surface- yes, it would be a different value on Mars). Given velocity at any point in trajectory, this yields actual FPE at point in question. Or are you doing something else entirely that I missed (in my usual semi-evolved simian way)? :-).

The formula does not rely on energy but rather momentum, after reading the FBI report that I think that you were alluding to I started thinking about a better way to predict permanent wound volumes. Bullet design and performance has a large impact I realize but the kinetic energy model did not seem to be as predictive as it should. When grafted log/log it turns into pretty much of a straight line. the constant 5.13 has a lot the math steps worked into it. I know it is not proper methodoligy not to show all steps in an equation with the proper units. It kind of became unitless. As a former lab rat, (got to be a big cheese, now just moldy) I was betting that you would look into this.
