Subject: AKSU VS G36C VS SIG552
sinfulcurvesAKUG    4/11/2004 6:57:14 AM
okie, I've never fired any of these...but am fascinated by pretty much any kinda SAR/SMG types. And after reading bits here 'n there saying these are pretty much in the same class/style, I got curious. I especially like the Kalashnikov, mmm! Anyways, I was jus curious about this. Also, not sure if I should say AKSU, or an AK-105, since their pretty much in same class, only maybe 105 is more upgraded, better?

Anyways, lemme know what ya'll think. =)

I haven't fired the SIG or the AKSU, but I have recently had occasion to fire a G36 carbine and American M4s (basic M4s and M4A1 SOPMODs). I prefer the M4A1 SOPMOD, with a good reflex sight, for various reasons.

I've used the M-4, and its predecessor, the CAR 15, as well as the short version Galil, the Glilon. They all suffered from one problem... their barrels were too short. Admittedly, this was in the pre-optical sight era, but I preferred something that gave me a little reach rather than a glorified SMG firing an assault rifle round. Moreover, I always felt that the flash from such shortbarreled weapons when fired at night was the battlefield equivalent of a big neon sign saying "here I am... shoot me!" I was an officer, but I carried a long barreled Galil for those reasons, despite the snickering of some of my peers.

I've only familliar with AKSU. Its rugged and reliable as any AK. Also, its very simple, easy to control and aim. Best fired with short bursts or single bullets. The barrel is to short. Effective range of fire is limited (about 50-100 meters). But I would prefer AKSU above SMGs (like PP-93, for example), because of more powerful ammo. Most of modern Russian SMGs use 9mm Makarov ammo, which is outdated by modern infantry armor (while 5,45 AKSU bullet can penetrate inf. armor on urban combat ranges).

I would note, however, that I recently was out on the range with a captain who was making consistent hits on a torso sized steel plate at 400 meters, from standing and kneeling positions, with an M4A1 SOPMOD fitted with a no-magnification reflex site. Now, terminal effects of a 5.56mm bullet from a 14.5" barrel at that range may have been questionable, but the weapons was hitting consistently.

i agree, with both questionable effects and with good accuracy in competent hands (not a windy day?).

>>i agree, with both questionable effects and with good accuracy in competent hands (not a windy day?).<< Nope, pretty good shooting day for long-guns. The guy with the M4A1 was going at the steel plate, along with a guy firing a privately owned M1A -- the combined attention eventually knocked the plate off its mounting bracket and tripod. I was impressed that the M4A1 was hitting that far out, but suspect the plate falling had more to do with the M1A's attentions . . . The M1A was also hitting more consistently, but then the guy firing it was prone and braced with sand bags, while the guy with the M4 was up on his feet and still putting 3-4 out of 5 into the target.
