Even though they served the bad guys(Nazis) in WW2 I think that the German Wehrmacht and Waffen SS are some of the greatest fighters in history. As for German weapons, when this writer was studying WW2 he was an absolute fan of the MP40 sub machine gun. Heckler and Koch should be praised for developing the MP5, surely the most widely used smg in the western world. The Rheinmetall MG42 and MG3 should get lots or respect too despite being outsold by the FN MAG, but the design is over 62 years old and still being used depsite the change from 7.92mm to 7.62mm.

Germans have been the pioneres of small arms weapons from the first bolt action rifles, first SMGs, first Assualt rifle, first Tipped bullets, and first guns built from metal and plastic And in my opinion they have some the best weapons today

Germany have always made good hardware. Stuff they made in WW2 is still used in designs today. Modern MGs are based on the MG42 as someone else said, and the STG44 was the base design of the AK47 which the Russians 'aquired' after the war. Germany still makes good stuff today.Good for them.

I've always been interested by the fact that the "quintessential" Rusian military round, the 7.62 x 39mm, is actually German in origin. It was originally called the 7.92 x 38.5 Polte, having been designed in the late 1930s by that firm as part of the Wehrmacht's project to develop the "Maschinenkarabiner" series of intermediate rifles that gave birth to the modern combat rifle. (And to all you handloaders out there, yes, this is why the "7.62 K" requires .323" bullets instead of .308" ones....) .

1st off... i 100% agree with the general concencus of this borad that German weapons are of the highest quality and amung the best in the world, if not THE best in world. The MP-5, MG-42, G-3 and now the G-36 to name but a few clearly show that the Germans are world leaders in this field. just have to make one point though.. the Germans did not invent the Submachine gun like many people believe. The Italians did. 1st with the Vilar-Perosa and then with the more practical OVP. I cant remember what the 1st German SMG was (MP18?) but I know it didnt come 1st... could anyone tell me where the origin of this myth came from?? Again, deep respect for the German weapons industry... i dont know where modern armys would be without it!! B.L

The villar Perosa was the first smg but the Italians used it more as a light support weapon. The MP18 followed in 1918 but the Germans used is the way a smg is normally used. So, the Italian design was first, but the MP18 was the first to be used with SMG tactics.

Why do You all think the Yanks came up with the Marshall Plan. The thought of communist hordes armed with German weapons - scary.
