This article gives far, far too much credit to Kalashnikov and the bureaucracy of the USSR. The AK was, and is, the direct result of the German STg-43/44. Nothing more; nothing less. Certainly, Kalashnikov made enough changes and incorporated enough post-war knowledge to earn the privilege of having the Soviet rifle named for him. But it, and ALL it's derivatives, are of purely German ingenuity. They did the heavy lifting in the design; Kalashnikov simply picked up the pieces post-war and streamlined the design. Good on him for it, but he did not create the AK out of whole cloth. Germany takes a great deal of blame as losers of an all-out war but she DID do some right well designing where it came to arms. At least give her that credit, if little more.
