Subject: Northrup (EADS) expected to withdraw from tanker competition

Didn't see this one coming - what with McCain's recent repeated insistence that there be competition in the process:

It appears the Pentagon feels the 767's smaller size is an advantage. I wonder if concerns over EADS delays with the A400 and A380 didn't give them pause as well. I am nonetheless somewhat surprised the Pentagon didn't want a mix of large and small similar to what they have today.

The Airforce has announced it will not change the RFP specs. see:

Northrup/EADS want their A330 based aircraft to get extra credit for its extra capacity  to compensate for its extra cost.  Without this in the process, they feel they'll be at an unfair disadvantage. So they have threatened to pull out. If EADs is out of this competition, Boeing gets a $100billion blessing, and EADs feels investors crank up the pressure as both the A380 and the A400 are behind schedule.  Really bad timing for this - its like strike 3.  Its not a rosy picture for EADS/Airbus.
