Subject: Il-76 equivalents

I read in the latest Soldier of Fortune (30th anniversary issue) that China has bought several dozen Il-76 transports and it investing in airborne forces, to increase its power projection capability. What class of transport is the Il-76- does it field the same size and capacity as the C-141 or is it closer to the C-17?

its not even close to the c-17 in any catagory it was better than the c-141a, but not the c-141b (which is larger than the c-141a) IL-76=88000lb for 2805 miles/140troops/120 para c-141b=90880 for 2550miles/205troops/168para

It is difficult to say without a range/payload diagram. The Cub and the C-130H had the same performance roughly, when the bare figures were in evidence; but when that diagram came forward - it was something different: The Cub had to trade payload for range, whereas the Herky is almost "square": As long as it can take off with - it will fly it to the max distance. This is one of the beautiful characteristics of C-130 : It will do what ask of it - within reason, not a lot of ifs, buts and maybees.
