Australian RAAF has received it first C-27J from a total order of 10. The
Spartan was chosen over the C-295 because the C-27J could land at more small airfields. It also fit the same pallets as the C-130 and the new G Wagons of the Australian army.
The purchase was a long time coming because of the need to replace the capability of the retired, for five years, De Havilland
Caribou. While the C-27J can do some of the Caribou's task, it is also seen as supportive of Australia's C-130J fleet.

The U.S. Air Force itself bought 10 C-27As in the 1990s, but took them out of service because it was cheaper to fly stuff in the larger C-130

Absolutely... what is the point of calculating cost in an perfect world? In the real world the smaller aircraft has proven itself... the fact that it can land in a small strip and not just drop pallets... hello???? These Generals...

Those articles are over 2 years old, not 4 months.
Since then there have been mandatory orders to make budget cuts, and the argument is that the C-130s have a higher total lift capacity for a given cost.

Given the success of the Harvest Hawk on the C130, would the C27 have similar capabilities with a lower operating cost? Flying as slowly as 160 kph, where MANPADS are not a threat, this craft could offer all-day CAS for CHEAP.
