Subject: Submitting product ideas to the military...
DJ    1/2/2003 2:36:52 PM
I work for a hi-tech company up here in Canada that is producing an experimental personal communications device. I'm not working on the project myself, but when I saw the alpha version, I thought that would be a cool thing for soldiers in the field to have. So I went up to the product manager and asked if he had considered showing the device to various militaries around the world to get feedback. He said he hadn't, so I said I would look into it.

Yep, I confess I am a little lacking in knowledge on how to submit product ideas to the US/British/Canadian military. Does anybody know of any web sites/trade shows/articles that could shed some light on the issue? Or is getting your stuff looked at by Defense Department so incredibly opaque and difficult that I should throw my hands up in the air and give up?

thanks in advance, DJ

Try US Special Forces Command. Their website used to have some information on contracting for them and their bureaucracy is deliberately minimal.

Sir: For the US Army, generally (GENERALLY!) the relevant command to talk to if you have radio stuff to show off is CECOM, or the Communications-Electronics Command. Look here for more info link Also, look here: link The website is the Command's Technical Industrial Liasion Office, which is basically what you're looking for.

DJ As an old, superannuated in this day and age, infantryman might I humbly suggest that soldiers don't really need "COOL" equipment. They are already hovering on the edge of being fixed in place by all that ESSENTIAL gear they have to carry. If your equipment serves to lighten the load, GOOD! If not or if it just serves to make the taxpayer feel less guilty about sending a fellow citizen into "harm's way" then you know who has my heartfelt sympathy. WB
