They sell all kinds of stuff, but I believe that they made fortune on AK rifles. And they barely invested anything in development. Anybody could have done it, but I doubt anyone sold as much as they did. Every irregular in Africa has one, and most of the regulars too.

According to interview Mr. Kalashnikov was furious about it. Soviet Union has been giving it away and former satellite countries and allies are still selling it for hard currency.

Ah...The good old days, I remember back in mid-1980', I can get a Mak-90 and ~1000 rds of 7.62x39 for something like $199 (or 299).  And of course, I didn't.

Keffler, like it or not, Type 56 is AK today, indeed. Almost all of the AK's which are in use today are Type 56. By 'in use' I mean real life combat situations. They might not be as good as former East German or Bulgarian, but they seem to be good enough. People are fighting wars with Type 56, not AKM or AMD (Hungarian) or Beryl (Polish).

You get what to pay for, NORINCO weapons are very poor quality like most of China's state owned monopolies, no competition means no need to improve Quality.

Don't rubbish all chinese made stuff mate.
Your original statement was 100% spot on.
You can pay penuts and get total drek, conversely, there are chinese factories that charge like raging bulls, but the stuff they produce is top notch. Depends how much you're willing to spend.
Your typical customer is usually some 2 bit despot who cares as much for his soldiers as he does for the peasants he's extorting for a living, so yeah, gimmi the most amount of crap you got, i'll pay you the least amount for it, and we all happy.

Yep, Spot on, i stand corrected.
Historically the praetorian guard always gets the best of the best.
And china can supply the whole gamut.

I think that important clients are middlemen who sell weapons in conflict zones. And they buy whatever they can sell with profit. Doesn't need to be cheap stuff all the time.
