Subject: Possible Comanche cancellation!

Even a blind man could see that UAVs can do the mission of the Comanche for a lot less cost and UAVs are available NOW.

Phoenix Rising    RE:Possible Comanche cancellation!   8/24/2002 12:07:04 AM
While the idea of stealth helicopters is good in theory, I think the amount of trouble the Comanche was experiencing says a lot; even if we somehow sunk enough millions into it to get it through the tests we set up for it, there is just so much that can go wrong in-theater that I wouldn't want to entrust precious troops to them. If the stealth was ever compromised, they were going to be a lot more vulnerable than an Apache, and as for their recon/surveillance mission potential, we're developing other ways to take care of that. UAV's and satellites are both getting better (though not really cheaper). On the other hand, there also is a lot to be said for good old-fashioned scouts on the ground, especially if we ever get that futuristic chameleon-like outfit technology to work (of course, that's a pipe dream even further away than the Comanche). Not everything with the words "new" and "high tech" attached to it is a necessary investment. --Phoenix Rising

Granted, the UAV's can do much of the surveillance capabilities of the Comanche, but the Comanches definitely were not useless because of it. They were a heavily armed, highly maneuverable attack and personell transport helicopter. This helicopter could (and did in all test flights) shoot on the fly, fly sideways nearly at full speed, and do a vast assortment of other 'tricky' air maneuvers. They would be perfect for the urban warfare made such a big deal in the war in Iraq, and were only a couple of years from their official release, and some were due to come into production within a year of the program's cancellation. This helicopter could be used in many of the places that the heavier, bulkier Apaches and Blackhawks could not be used. In fact, there is an airfield in England kept in business solely by the fact that America buys Apaches from this company, and they are getting shot out of the sky. Comanches were a great helicopter, and now are being sold internationally. Althought maybe not cost-effective over the 21 years the project existed, the amount of money necessary to finish the project would vastly outweigh the dollar amount necessary.

Commanche could not transport troops. It was strictly a 2-seater. Nor are they available commercially. The facts of its cancellation are pretty simple to understand; It was designed for a threat that no longer exists and it is much cheaper to lose Apache's at 1/2 the cost than it is Commanche's. I suspect the real reason behind the cancellation was the Army's belated realization that the attack helicopter is going the way of the Dodo.
