When you let a project die, it's not there when you need it. And it won't be, because it takes too long now to get a system from idea to in the field. The idea that the platform is irrelevant is rather flawed, because when you pit one force against each other, -every- factor comes into play. And we don't know how well all these things will work.

I think ideally you need to follow to conclusion most of the projects you start. We literally waste billions of dollars in the EMD portion of a program preparing planning and tooling for a major production program only to have congress constantly play with the numbers and the program to the point that the programs become too inefficient to continue.
