Subject: Iraq Army Equipped With Cold War Surplus

Ref. news item.

That is a new twist to disarmament: Instead of burning and destroying old weapons, give them to the Iraqi's, they cannot use them for warlike purposes.

Depending on who you're going against and exactly how old Cold War surplus is, it'll probably be equal to or better then other people's stuff.

Since a number of NG divisions are being reorganized as Mech or Infantry (like the 49th Amd to 36th Inf). You would think all those excess early model M-1s with the 105mm cannon would be available. Note that most or all of the Cold War surplus in Europe has been doled out to our considered friendly courntries ie. Turkey, Greece, Egypt and others for the cost of shipping. I'll wager that the Iraqi military will eventually receive new off the assembly line combat aircraft, tanks, and vehicles. The military/industrial contractors have significant sway in these type of decisions..

Hey Folks, If it is free then we should coordinate with our other allies and see what is available. The present situation requires few heavy vehicals. I would say that looking at the regional situation maybe get t-54/55 from Egypt. The Iraqi's have some industrial base for that MBT and plenty of operators that were not in the elite units!!! Sincerely, Keith

Wall decorations? I think what you mean is that they can't use them for unjust purposes(aggresive wars, etc). If they are attacked we certainly would want them to use their weapons for warlike purposes.

I don't see the Iraqis running around with any weapons that they didn't have with Saddam. They don't have any NEW weapons. These are the ones left over from the old regime. I don't imagine that Iraq will get any tanks or fighters for a very long time either. The US is going to keep them on a very short leash.

Lot of nations has had weapon they could not use - lots of fighter wings in the third world hardly fly at all. The Saudies spring to mind.
