Subject: Strategy error re comparative range of AMRAAM and Meteor
WDDavenport    11/22/2003 9:17:06 PM
[ The Meteor, scheduled for service in Europe in 2010, is a Next Generation active guidance missile. Its ramjet propulsion gives it a range of in excess of 100km at a speed of Mach 4, almost three times further than the current AMRAAM operated by the RSAF on its F16s.]

That is wrong. The current AMRAAM's maximum range is not much less than the 100 kn advertised for the Meteor.

StrategyPage sometimes makes mistakes, kids.

All the sources I can find put the standard AIM120 range at between 20 and 30 miles (32km to 48km). One or two put the range at 48 miles, but I believe this to be an error (should be KM). The Meteor, otoh, has 55 miles (88km) range at least, although manufacturer and govt websites say 62 miles (100km) plus. These figures represent head-on engagements between converging aircraft. Perhaps you are thinking of the non-existent ERAAM, AIM120 P3I P3 or some other missile? Anyway, no mistake on Strategy Page's part, that I can see.

The AMRAAM's range is further than 30 miles, but its effective range is between 20-30. So the Meteor's effectiveness is probably between 35-45, if your stats are correct. Which is still pretty damn fine. The difference being, of course, that the AMRAAM is in service worldwide right now, while the Meteor has six years to go. I would expect the Meteor to be a more effective missile, given that it's ten years newer.

Galderio    Warplane database!   10/14/2004 10:27:08 AM
Equipment databases are some of the few things that are not so good in this homepage. We should ask for changes! Warplane database says: the F-104 is a good figther as the mig-31, the Rafale and the Falcon are in the same level, and F-4 is better than the unknow J-10 and the F-14b. I can´t tell you what is wrong with the database, but looks like it was made by someone from Boeing´s marketing departament. I do not see any pratical use for these informations here.
