Subject: Aegis to Australia?
Yamauchi    11/11/2003 4:06:06 PM
AUSTRALIA EXPANDS SEA-BASED DEFENSES
New naval acquisitions now being considered by Canberra will substantially expand Australia's potential role in the Bush administration's proposed Asian missile defense shield. Japan's Kyodo news service (November 7) reports that the Australian Defense Ministry is currently eyeing the purchase of three new air warfare destroyers outfitted with the Aegis ship-warfare system, as well as the refitting of four existing missile frigates to carry the SM-2 interceptor missile. The acquisitions, according to Australian Defense Minister Robert Hill, are intended to bolster Canberra's defense needs in response to mounting regional threats and Australia's growing role in preventing international proliferation. "After reviewing our defense capabilities, the government has decided to provide the ADF (Australia Defense Force) with new assets, equipment and capabilities that will ensure it continues to be able to defend Australia and Australian interests in an uncertain and complex environ!
ment," Hill said upon unveiling the defense plan.

If Australia actually makes such a purchase, that will speak volumes about what the government really believes is going on in the world. This is an extremely expensive system and the Australians have not favored large military budgets in more than a generation.

Aegis is going to be very expensive. Hopefully the Austrailian military can pull it off because that would be a huge jump in capabilities for them. If it didn't work out, I wonder if they might go buy a few Type 45's from the brits or maybe something like the Horizon? All three ships would be a definate boost to their capabilities. Hey maybe the US could by a few of the Collins class subs and sell them to Taiwan. In return we could give Aus a few Arleigh Burkes.

Australia will definitely be buying AEGIS, most probably in a form similar to the Spanish F-100. Arleigh Burke would be nice but is probably too big with too high a manning requirement. What do you think the government believes is going on in the world?

Personally I think the Blohm & Voss Meko-X Destroyer is a good chance for the platform, and the various radars themselves being locally produced CEA AUSPAR modular units hooked into the AEGIS combat system.

The MOD has said that the combat system on the new Air Warfare destroyers will definately be American, therefore probably AEGIS. They are very focused on network-centric war at present, so this is probably for intra-operability with the USN. The F-100 has been floated around as an idea, but it is too early to find out what platform they are really going to buy.

The Aegis battle management system, the SPY Radar, and the Standard missile's electronic chatacteristics are all tightly interwoven. You can't easily swap someone else's radar for the SPY.

YOu may have heard, yes the RAN is definitely getting AEGIS. The new destroyers designs will be announced in 2006, to be built here in Australia (hopefully Melbourne!!!) There are three contenders: USA - Gibbs & Cox - probably a modified/downsized Arleigh Burke design, a lot of clout, given the fleet agreement signed between the USN and RAN earlier this year. Germany - Blohm and Voss - another MEKO design, probably a Saschen class or similar, with mods for AEGIS and SPY, etc. We're very happy with the ANZACs, a Blohm and Voss MEKO design. Spain - IZAR - the Alvaro de Bazan (F100) class has requirements along the lines of what the RAN is after (crew requirements, and good price) AND they already have AEGIS and Spy. Another factor is that IZAR is the frontrunner in the RAN LHD/LST replacement program. After the preferred is announced, there will be a tendering process for manufacturing here in Australia - Australia Defence Industries shipyards in Sydney, Tenix here in Melbourne (they built/completed the Anzacs), Australian Submarine Corporation in Adelaide will probably bid, too - the made 5 of the 6 Collins (Crappy Swedish workmanship the reason for a lot of the first's faults). So, it'll be an interest couple of years. Whoever wins, Australia is in the select AEGIS club, and we're proud to be too. Pucka

What I find even more interesting si the possiblities it opens for an air defence of Australia. Most of Australia is nothing (no offence), but the Northern City of Darwin could be exposed. An Aegis in conjunction with fighters could mean a terrifying forward air defence of Australia with mobility to SAMs and Radars. That will be the air defence system to beat! Now You Aussies only lack to reinstall the Coastal Watchers of WW2 - any fat jobs for a top notch aircraft spotter???

Well, I'm sure it's possible now that we are cousins by marriage for danes to get work into Australia. ;) Theres always spotting jobs for NORFORCE, but its rugged country, a few US Rangers have gone home early on training exercises. ;) Bring your suntan lotion and a big hat (and a fishing rod)!
