TomHorn    Availability of Troops   5/7/2008 10:34:42 AM
The Marine Corp has expanded by about 20,000. I assume there is also an expansion of the Army.

Yet this article link there are no troops available for Afghanistan. Other media articles state that the Army is strechted to the limit.

Can someone please explain.

FJV    Tooth to tail ratio   5/7/2008 1:01:46 PM
For every guy in actual combat there are several other guys for the logistics, command and control, support, etc.

This is called the tooth to tail ratio. If I remember correctly I've read somewhere that the number of Army Soldiers that do the actual fighting in Iraq numbers in the several tens of thousands. The rest is support, logistics, command staff, etc.

So for every 20000 hired a fraction will be in a combat role.

Anybody know how their recruiting from the Berkeley, California, area is doing.
The Marines are getting a lot of free publicity there.

I remember in the early 90's seeing a confrontation between ROTC officers/cadets and an anti-military guy on UC Berkeley campus in a verbal combat.  ROTC guys (in white so must've been navy) had put out a table like other clubs from the campus to try to recruit freshmen.  And one guy passing by decided to try to pick a fight.  He was basically in the face of the officer in charge (?) taunting/arguing.  I was impressed how the officer looked so calm and in command and made his case.

BTW, the majority of student body at UC Berkeley isn't all that extreme or anti-military anti-etc  any more.  Just regular college kids trying to get ahead in life...

The ration is almost 10 to 1 ground troops.
