Subject: Suicides

My opinion:
One of the major causes of suicides in Canadian troops overseas was wives/ girlfriends back home. During the pre-training for my second tour(cancelled, Croats overran the area) they stressed that we should not give power of attorney to our girlfriends because many relationships won't last the six months. If you combine living in a war zone and mix in problems at home like your girlfriend cleaning out all that UN pay your making, it can make for depressed soldiers. I know a few guys this sort of thing happened to, so it wasn't uncommon nor was it restricted to females doing it to males. We know that soldiers in combat areas live on the edge and take risks and are just generaly more extreme than normal. When you add it all together you get guys killing themselves that normally wouldn't. One Canadian guy actually put a grenade in his flak jacket!

When I served my term in the Royal Danish Air Force as a conscript in 1983 a fellow conscript comitted suicide. The only comment was: Thank god it wasn't with a service weapon, so we wont have to do that paperwork. Suicides in military service is an underreported problem.
